Ticking/clicking noise.

Hi all, seeking advice, I've a petrol qashqai that has developed a ticking/clicking noise from underneath. I've had the mechanic check it out twice now and he can't find anything. It goes away when I press in the clutch, but the mechanic said it wouldn't be the clutch throw out bearing/ clutch release bearing, he said that would make a louder noise.

The noise is like as if there was a nail or tack stuck in the thread. But all tyres are clear of those. What else disengages when you push in the clutch pedal? Or any other suggestions would be appreciated, as it's doing my head in. Btw it can't be heard when the windows are up, it can only be heard when they are down a bit. Thanks for any help.

Does it do it when stationary or driving, do engine revs make a difference.

If it is doing it when stationary, weird rattly tappy noises can be related to the exhaust or exhaust heat shield. Engaging or disengaging the clutch can alter sounds that are not related to the clutch or transmission.

With the car idling, hold the end of the exhaust with your hand in a cloth. If the sound changes, there's your culprit.

Only when driving. Revs don't make a difference either unfortunately. The mechanic fixed the heat shield previously. I'll try your advice with the exhaust thank you

Have you checked the dust shields behind your brake discs for damage of obstruction?

Yeah the mechanic pushed them back too there a few weeks ago. But still the ticking noise. Very frustrating.

If it's only doing it when driving it is unlikely to be exhaust related, also my suggestion of holding the exhaust pipe isn't going to work out too well with the car moving :)

Unlikely to be a CV joint, mechanic should spot that immediately and it would also be very apparent in low speed manoeuvring.

Yeah I get ya 😁 I might go to another mechanic for a second opinion.
