Exhaust System Light on-Would this be an NCT fail?

    Hi folks,

Apologies for the long post. 🙂

Have a 2010 Skoda Superb Diesel which is due for NCT next week.It has being a great reliable car…..not mad mileage on it….265,000km’s.

Around a month ago I noticed that the exhaust fumes were slightly darker than usual, and is a slight effect on car performance. If idling at traffic lights for example the engine now revs slightly while static iykwim…..as if you are hitting the feed on and off.

A week ago the ‘Control System for Exhaust’ Management light came on in it.

Was chatting a mechanic who said it may need new exhaust sensors…..or that the injectors may be going in it (the phantom revving in it)….but I’m loathe to spend much on it.

Not a car worth ploughing money into.Going to put it through NCT and see how it does.Has passed with little work in last 5/6 years.

The warning light came on for around 3 days…..then went off for a few days but is back on now🙄…..maybe if I put some Dipathane in and gave it a hard drive on motorway it might knock it off again?🤞

Would the exhaust system management light being on cause an instant fail……even if it passed the exhaust emissions test?

Thanks for any replies and advice.

No it shouldn’t be a fail. Only the engine light, airbag light or ABS light would warrant a fail

Is the engine light on only a fail for diesels ? My petrol toyota has passed the last 4 years with the engine light on but emission tests were perfect.

Yes, only for diesels so far.

But you might want to check that out. These things don't get better.

Naturally I did as soon as it came on.Garage said its related to an air sensor and recommended only replacing it if either engine performance was affected or increased fuel consumption occurred given the age of the car, 99 D. Four or maybe five years later its still going really well.

Ignoring Dpf light could be Troublesome if dpf started to block could take out your turbo then

He’s replying to the OP who has a diesel, he just refuses to use the quote button

Thanks. That's bloody annoying. Might just put them on ignore. Time waster.

In fairness, he's replying to the thread topic and not some OT stuff about another poster's engine light being on for 4 years.

The quote button is there for a reason. If you're too lazy to use it, I don't have to waste my time scrolling through a thread to see the context.

Are you off your trolley complete Narcissist why would you think I be replying to you 🤔 it op tread not your take a jump

Are you off your trolley? I clearly didn't know who or what you were replying to.

Use the bloody quote button. That's what it's there for.

    Hi folks,

Thanks to everyone who replied to my questions……Have the NCT on my 2010 Superb on Saturday…..apologies for longish post!

In the meantime I’ve been researching on Donedeal in the evenings this week in order to choose a car to buy in place of old Superb if it doesn’t pass NCT…..(given its age hardly worth spending a lot on it if needs retest)

Looking at possible ones…..Audi 4’s and Skoda Superbs. On Donedeal looked at cars with max of 2 owners and not excessive mileage.

Will happily admit car knowledge not one of my strong points so really appreciate any pointers/advice on my questions below ⬇️ 🙏

Live in a rural setting but on motorway for half of journey to work…..where I can drive at good speed.

Have a short 10 mile commute to work each day (20 miles in total) At weekends or after work would maybe do another 20 miles a day typically (taxi service for kids to training!)….visiting mates/heading to town to do weekly shop etc)…..

Wondering should I go for a Petrol car given I’m not doing hard/long regular motorway trips to keep DPF cleared out on a Diesel?….would be heading to likes of Dublin or Galway around once a month…..two hour run of 100 miles+……would that be enough to blow the cobwebs off it if staying with a diesel as new car?
Budget would be around 16k with a bit of wiggle room for a straight purchase.

From Donedeal you could get a 2015 to 2017 Petrol Audi A with mileage below 160k for around 16k.From what I can see Skoda don’t seem to have done Petrol Superbs of that vintage?…..but have in recent years.
Are Petrols much more expensive to run per year?…..never owned one!🙂

Then if staying diesel…..if going Audi route 16k could get you a 2015/16 A4 2litre with mileage below 160k……

Given my lack of mileage per year I doubt if it justifies buying a 2 l car though?

Finally onto what is probably my preference …..to stay with a more modern Skoda Superb Diesel.

16 k straight will get you a tidy 2015 to 2017 1.6 L Superb with mileage below 180k.Good number of them on Donedeal. Would preferably buy in West of Ireland but Dublin ok too.

    So have 16k with small wiggle room for straight buy……now onto current 2010 1.6l Superb.It’s well kept,regular service history etc…..only 265K km’s on it…..not bad for a diesel……

Prob worth €1500 max to sell straight with NCT passed…….(would a boy racer be interested in it?)……as I see them in older Octavia’s a lot!😂…..

If it fails emissions test……What would a garage give to you for it as a trade in ?……bearing in mind it’s very clean and would probably only take a few aggressive drives for them to clear out the DPF on it)………and if they had to split it for parts it only got a new clutch 20 k miles ago and is in great shape.

Would you get €500 to €600 off garage with failed NCT? Brakes, suspension etc fine on it.Would preferably go the route of trading against new car…..

Am conscious I’ve asked a lot of questions but as said earlier I ain’t no Petrol head …..but at same time want to buy a decent car with good service record etc and max 2 owners….would consider a UK import provided mileage was genuine also.Would plan to mind this new purchase well and keep it for 5+ years all going well🤞

Anyway thanks very much for reading and would really appreciate anyone’s thoughts on putting my best foot forward…..

    An update folks….

Had NCT,failed it on emmisions test and need 2 new brake discs on back so considering its a 2010 car at least it wasn't a lengthy list of trouble! Brakes a straighforward fix, emmisions trickier imo.

Smoke result was 3.770/m……..I had given it a hard drive for around 20km on motorway on the way to the test centre.

Testing mechanic commented after that if the car got a good long hard drive for around 200 km ,it would probably clear out and pass on the retest.Wonder if I put some dipethane into it before such a run would it increase it's chances of passing?…….

Going looking at a 2017 Skoda Superb 1.6 TDI in a garage in Limerick today. It only has 125k km on the clock, had 2 owners, has 'Greenlight',is 'History Checked' by Garage, has 3 month Warranty,is in immaculate condition and a colour I like.

Salesman from garage said he would take my car as trade in,price depending on him seeing it today…..and if it passes retest on NCT or not.

Said before I'm not really too knowledgable about cars so would really apppreciate replies to these questions this morning.

    Re- 2017 Superb in garage.

    1. Based on its mileage, should it have needed a timing belt or water pump etc replaced yet?Anything else I should look out for with it?
    2. Should I pay the 25 euro on Donedeal to get History check myself……or when ad from garage on donedeal says 'History Check' is that the same info as I would get from 25 euro fee iykwim?
    3. Anything else I should look out for with the Garage car?

Re- My 2010 Superb…..is in great shape structurally etc.

1.If it passes Emissions retest etc what should I ask for it as trade in?….has 267k Km on it.Drives well,4 good tyres.Get a good local mechanic to service it regularly.

    2. If it fails test what's it roughly worth to garage for parts?…..was thinking 500 euro?

    3. It would probably make a great yoke for a boy racer if passes test!😊

Anyhow thanks for reading and really appreciate anyones thoughts this morning…..out the door to Limerick now!😀

Somebody else here filled up with HVO100 and that passed the smoke test easily.

    Progress or lack of update😗………

Didn't buy the Limerick car, couple of things put me off it.

-were a few spots along above rear number plate where paint was chipped or repainted slightly different shade.Would make you wonder if it had some small prang at some stage.Could not make it out from Donedeal pictures.

-Salesman was evasive on what possibly due work was done on the car…….eg Timing Belt change etc

-He was happy with condition of my car which was one good positive from the trip.

Said it above,am no car expert…..

So really appreciate more knowledgeable posters thoughts on following-

    1. If talking about a Skoda Superb of 2016 to 2018 age with 120 to 140 K km's on it,at what kind of mileage should first assessment/possible replacement of timing belt or water pump take place?

    2. Anything else to watch out for in a Skoda Superb Diesel 1.6L TDI from 2016-2018?

These are ages and mileages of cars I'm looking out for.

    Hello all,

Really appreciate any tips on what to look out for if viewing a Skoda Superb aged from 2016 to 2018 regarding what should be done with it already if mileage on clock is from say 120 k km’s to 140 k kms…….for eg-

Should it already have had a timing belt replaced?

Should it have a water pump replaced?

Anything else to look out for…..

Thanks very much for any advice.

Went and looked at a 2018 Skoda Superb at weekend, only 128k KM'S on it,and was a comfortable drive and in good tight shape on test drive, there was a warning light showing on dash.Salesman did mention it before test drive.Said it indicated that the Radar or Lane departure warning/Anti Collision needed to be recalibrated. As they are an independent Garage, salesman said he would be sending the car to local Skoda Main dealer this week to get it checked and recalibrated.

Am quite fond of the car and thinking of buying it but just wondering…… Is it a red flag that that kind of warning light would come on given the relatively low age and mileage on the car?

Salesman seemed very genuine and said it was probably just a gremlin in the system that recalibration would fix. They had only got the car in the previous week.

Would be very thankful for any replies on this question.

    Hi all,

Salesman just text me to say car was with Skoda garage this morning and has being 'recalibrated' so warning light gone off dash.Would be quite happy to buy this Superb for the reasons outlined ⬆️.

Really appreciate a reply asap on whether a warning light for 'Lane departure warning/Anti Collision' coming on in a relatively low mileage 2018 car would be a real red flag 🚩 to steer clear of it,or is it likely it's just a small issue that could come up with any Skoda Superb/other car of that age and mileage etc?

    Thanks for anyones thoughts.

Not to be dramatic but the radar cruise control sensor is in the front bumper, and usually the only way it gets ‘misaligned’ is from being in a front end whack. Personally I see it as a red flag but it could be something as simple as a bird hitting the sensor or could be something even more minor again like an electrical fault.

Would be important to try and find out what the Skoda garage found as causing the warning light to go on……although it probably wouldn’t be easy to do so.
