Issue with desktop PC

Hey guys, the last few times I left the desktop PC on standby it wouldn’t boot up again. I would normally click the mouse and all worked but now when I click, I just get the screen saver (maybe it’s the background image) and nothing else works. The little fonts on the home screen don’t display. So, I have to power down the computer by holding in the button and then restart with another press of the button. Any ideas of whats wrong or is there an easy fix?

Old advice - try the Escape key.

Ctrl+Alt+Del might bring up an options screen. Might just reboot the PC though…

If you are shutting down and rebooting, while the PC is off, disconnect and reconnect the mouse (and maybe the keyboard).

Also check the optical sensor on mouse is clear.

Thanks for that Esel. I'll give it a go later.

how often do you actually reboot it? have you received messages recently that a reboot is required to complete an OS patch install?

Go to DELL support website, search and install DELL Update and let the app scan&install drivers and firmware updates.

Lots of issues with standby and hibernation lately…

The pc is shut down every night. When updates become available I always select the option to install and shut down but I notice that it reboots anyhow and then shuts down during the update process. That's the only time I ever get a message.

    Ctrl, alt, delete.

    Open the task manager

Click run new task in the top right

    Type explorer.exe and ok/run

This should complete the boot into windows.

It's not tackling the cause of the issue, but that should work itself out after some updates!

muffler mentioned that 'nothing else works' after clicking the mouse, bar a hard power off - so i assume the keyboard is unresponsive too.

i mentioned it to a colleague and he said he's a vague memory of a power setting related to USB devices, which would ignore input from them - but thinking about it, this would mean it'd ignore the mouse click also.
