    Hi folks,

Currently looking at 1.6l and 2l Skoda Superb and VW Passats as need to buy a car.Have had both makes before and was happy but in 1.6l range.

Are 2l engines much more thirsty than 1.6l?…..would go for the extra bit of power if they weren’t too uneconomical.

Would do around 300 km a week for work commute.

    Thanks for any replies.

The 2L should be better at higher speeds since it has a 6 speed gearbox vs the 5 speed gearbox in the 1.6L?

Thanks for reply…..looking at a few 2l Passats and Superbs on DoneDeal in the 2014 to 2016 age bracket.Budget would be around 10k……mileage wise if car had good service history etc where should be upper limit be before saying its too high iykwim. As I would be keeping the car for 4 or 5 years and only doing 300km a week.

See a few fresh Passats and Superbs with around 280-300k km on them…….if they were well minded shouldn’t they do another 100k+ km with no real issues if well cared for.

    Again thanks for any replies.

I bought a well minded Octavia with the 1.6. I average about 5.4 L/100km going handy enough. 450,000km on the clock, still going strong.

I also have an Arteon with the 2.0 and that averages 4.9 L/100km on the same run.

Don't think you are going to get many 10 k examples with service history. Go for car with reasonable mileage rather than newer model with big miles . If u driving at 100 / 120 km / per hr for journey . Go for 2 litre

Just had a quick look at Done Deal - there's a few lowish mileage 1.6L diesels within your budget that may suit if you fail to get a decent 2.0L one.

Just two examples of each - a 2016 beige colour Skoda Suberb Estate with 142,000km €10,450 in Co. Meath

2015 dark blue Skoda Suberb 159,000km €10,500 in Roscommon town

2016 Dark grey VW Passat 87,500 miles (UK import) in Dublin 11

2015 Silver VW Passat, 96,000 miles (UK import) private seller in Dublin - NCT to May 2026

Use the webarchive to bring up the fuel consumption specs which will be NEDC for cars of this age.

    2014 Superb

In terms of consumption, there Very little difference between the 1.6 TDi and the 2.0 TDi. A bigger difference if the 1.6 TDi is the Greenline model.

if you are doing only 300 km a week, the difference in consumption will make feck all difference anyway.

With that sort of mileage why do you need a (relatively) big diesel?

Does 300 km/week justify any diesel with a DPF anymore? At best that's probably a 20/30 km trip per drive if it's being driven every day, really not enough for regenerations.

You'd get a Nissan Leaf for half that price and will do that commute for pennies. If running cost is that much of a factor.

Out of curiosity I looked up the performance of a 30kWh Leaf (just because there was one there at under 5k) and an Octavia 1.6 diesel. The differences were marginal, but the Leaf had more torque, more power and similar acceleration to the Octavia.
