Donkey Kong Country series for SNES, still in a class all by itself?

Number 3 in this series got the least love, cause the developers went sideways with some of the stage theme tracks, but it was still basically a continuity of the former two.

Number 2 got the most love I think simply cause the gameplay was perfect, and the atmosphere/artwork and backing tracks were ideally done.

Number 1 is arguably the best cause the artwork and soundtrack was the most involved, but it fell short in it's length.

All in all, still one of the best series of all time.

When it graduated onto more modern systems and went 3D, it just became generic and lost that sense of involvement, I could never get into anything after "country" series.

Did you try Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze?

One of the best 2D platformer out there.

I find the first and third a bit by the numbers. They're very simple platformers and the only stand out is the soundtrack. 2 is a hell of a lot better although I can name quite a few platformers on the SNES that are better.

I think the series is over rated due the the pre rendered visuals which don't hold up these days. Not bad games at all, I'd say they are very good but no where near top tier other than 2.

The retro studios developed entries though are excellent.

It's a pity Retro Studios didn't get to make another DK 2D platformer. I suppose they had to save Metroid 3D from development hell. And also there is a new 3D DK on Switch 2, so they didn't want to overload on DK.

Which other platformers for the SNES would you say are good (/better)?

And which are the RS titles?

Retro Studio titles are the two Donkey Kong Country returns games.

As for better platformers, Mario World and Yoshi's Island, Kirby Super Star Saga, Plok, Do Re Mi Fantasy, Castlevania 4, Demons Crest, Super GnG, skyblazer, mystical ninja games, tiny toons buster breaks loose, super adventure island 2, Megaman X and X2.

I know that's a lot of games but there's a lot of good stuff on the SNES, they're still fun games worth playing just a little over rated I feel, especially the first game. I probably put DKC2 over a few on the list above.

There’s parts in the Retro Studios games you could describe as genius without any qualification at all. Bopopolis in Tropical Freeze would be my shout for best platforming level ever.
