I have only seen this recently. When I try and track a train that I am on, the 'live map', does not seem to give its real time position. I think it is giving its location as it should be according to the its timetable. If that is the case, this is useless. Not, it seems, taking into account delays etc. Has anyone else any experience of this?

On the Sligo line it shows the actual position, but this only changes when the train enters a station. If you click on the train, it shows you the timetable as well as how early/late the train is. As with buses, occasionaly it doesn't work, but it does work the vast majority of the time.

Different lines may behave differently, I don't know.

The Live Map takes data directly from the signalling system, not some sort of a GPS tracking system, so the train positions are established based on track circuit occupancy. It works off the same data that the signallers do, except parsed towards the public.

I wondered about that, thanks for the explanation.

It is not live at all. It is estimated based on roughly where the train should be between sections of signals. The further out you go with bigger gaps, the more useless it becomes. It knows nothing of delays etc.

    I recommend completely ignoring it.

That's not true. It's generally pretty good with delays. But again, it's based on sections.
