Growatt - Will it work with non-Growatt batteries?

    Hi All,

I had a Growwat SPH inverter installed last year by a local installer. All working fine, but was thinking of adding more batteries. I currently only have a Growwat 3kw battery. The installer has said that I can only add Growwat batteries to the system as Growwat inverters will only place nice with Growwat batteries!

I did some googling and am finding it hard to find definitive answers or hardware compatibility lists that would either support or disprove the statement!

Does anyone have a Growwat SPH inverter installed? What batteries are you using? Is there compatibility issues with other brands of batteries? Any advice appreciated.

    Cheers!

I'm interested in this, too, so would really appreciate any insights from others.

I've a Growatt SPH inverter (SPH5000) with 2x 3kWh batteries from Growatt with the install. But was thinking about replacing them with more storage.

I don't want to get into messing with DIY batteries, but from some other threads on here there are Gobel Power batteries that can be bought relatively cheaply (if you don't mind waiting longer for land/sea delivery, rather than by air). These are reportedly compatible with Growatt, but I haven't taken the plunge yet.

Hi Fingleberries, glad Im not alone with the question! That battery looks interesting. Approx how much are they landed? Do you have any links to information that says that they are compatible?

In my googling, I did find this:

    https://dyness.com/Public/Uploads/uploadfile/files/20241231/DynesscampatiblelistLV241015200.pdf

It seems to suggest that several of the Dyness batteries are compatible with The Growatt SPH, eg: SPH/SPA 3K~10K TL、
SPH-10KTL-HU, but the last few letters are different I think?!….so not sure.

I was told (but not sure how accurate it is) that Growatt have a whitelist of batteries that they will work with….but I have had no success finding anything that says what batteries they work with!

One of my friends had a growat hybrid inverter and was using it with the dyness batteries just fine, don't know exactly which model though.

Best way is to go the battery settings on the inverter and see if you find different battery brands in the settings list.

i actually passed over on a quote from an installer who supply growatt inverters, batteries, and car charger. that was not the only reason (i'd have probably passed on that installer anyway) but it made me suspicious that growatt is a 'closed' system. as i was passing on it anyway, i didn't do any further researcg into that.

Unfortunately, I don't have a quote, just that the battery website lists compatibility with Growatt.

I'll try to dig out the old Boards thread where people had bought these (I don't think they had growatt), but it was crazy cheap if I recall. Perhaps around the €2k mark, but I'll need to find the thread to be sure.

Found it - the old thread was corrupted on Boards and couldn't be displayed any more.

Starting from this comment, it looks like it cost about €2,700 shipped (in 2023) and took about 6-ish weeks to arrive.

    Slightly off topic

I don't want to derail the thread, so please feel free to ignore this part in future replies: One piece of advice that I have from experience, though, is that the Growatt inverter is not great if you want to take advantage of automation (like HomeAssistant, etc.) to control the inverter to switch modes or dump battery to cash in on Export rates, etc.

The inverter lets you monitor from these automation platforms only, meaning you have to manually go to the growatt portal and change the mode (with the daily password for each change). I've heard that other inverters are much easier to deal with for this sort of thing.

But, if you're not worried about HomeAssistant, etc., that might not be a worry.

Thanks Fingleberries. Also thanks for the "off topic". Its actually not off topic at all. I do regret getting the Growatt and am completely torn between replace it or just keep building on top of a bad foundation!

For what its worth, I added a Seplos DIY battery to existing Solis WECO setup, I run the inverter on the WECO setting and to date all seems ok.

As long as batteries are same voltage and cell numbers same you should be ok.

Seplos was £1500 all in, plenty of help with the battery build on here including our own ghost's videos on YouTube.

Sorry to resurrect this older thread, but I’m curious to hear from anyone who’s added extra storage to their Growatt inverter, especially if it wasn’t a Growatt‑branded battery.

    • If you’ve gone with a non‑Growatt battery, which one did you choose and how did it work out?
      • I'm not adventurous enough and don't likely have space for DIY Battery which is why the Gobel Power ones looked interesting to me.
      • Also, I'd could think to sell my old Growatt batteries (ML33RTA, 3.3 kWh LiFePo4) to maybe soften the cost of the batteries and to free up space
    • Did you need a registered electrician to hook it up, or is it plug-and-play?

Thanks in advance for any insights.
