Gas meter replacement concern

Gas networks Ireland are replacing all gas meters over 20 years old. In my apartment block my neighbour had it done, but the safety check they carry out afterwards failed. There was a very small loss of pressure detected, somewhere from the meter to her boiler but they don’t know exactly where. Her supply is cut off and she must get it solved at her own expense which could leave her with substantial costs and disruption. I am due to get this work carried out and obviously fearing the same outcome.

I’ve heard this issue is more common than we know, especially in boom build apartments from the mid 2000’s like ours.

Looking for any comments on this please. Many thanks.

If the apartment block had an undetected gas leak (which could be a sign of a degrading pipe, btw) and a safety inspection caused the gas to one apartment to be isolated, should you not be thankful that the safety inspection process performed as it should and picked up on the defect??

One thing needs to happen here: the location of the leak needs to be traced to find out whether it's (1) in the individual apartment or (2) in the OMC owned fabric of the building, and whether it's an endemic issue (ie, has the potential to affect all of the piping over time) or whether it's isolated to that one pipe only.

If it turns out to be isolated to that one apartment then that's fine - fix gets applied and everybody's happy. But if it's in the fabric of the building then it's up to the OMC to resolve and you'll need to collectively find out what your rights are in terms of getting the leak investigated and repaired by the OMC.

Just in case it's the latter then you need to be aware of this post from a few months ago:

    Keep us posted!

Thanks for that. Very informative. My neighbour has not rectified the situation yet but has an electric immersion and hot water tank so it’s only the radiators she is without. If I’m hit with the same issue it’s much worse. I have a combi boiler. No gas means no hot water, no shower as mine is mains water fed, no rads. Anyway it is what it is. I will update in due course.
