Towing Capacity - Japanese Import

    Hi all,

I have an Audi which was imported from Japan. It does not have any towing weights stamped on the chassis plate, which makes any kind of towing illegal. I understand the model can tow between 1200 and 1400kg depending on the model and the lack of towing weight on Japanese models is just due to how uncommon towing is over there.

Has anyone heard of getting new chassis plates for Japanese imports which have the actual towing limits?

On the face of it, it should be simple, but the reality of that is bound to be much different!

    Thanks!

That chassis plate is linked to type approval for that specific model and build. I don't think that it'll be possible to legally get a retrospective rating for your car. I know that its likely the equivalent of a build that's sold here but that won't suffice and a chassis plate update won't pass muster with an insurance company when push comes to shove.

You could go this route: https://www.nsai.ie/certification/automotive/national-type-approva/iva/ but it's likely to be cheaper to sell the car that you have and buy another.
