Garden lamp post - planning required?

My neighbour has erected a lamp post in the garden, just inside their boundary.

It is approximately 4.2m above the height of my side of the boundary, which is probably at least 50cm higher than their side, so the total height is probably around 4.7m.

Does this require planning?

It's not bothering me massively, as it's directed mostly into their garden, but it is a bit…unusual.

Rear garden or front garden?

Generally it should comply with the 1.2m requirement for front garden and 2m requirement for rear garden.

Front. It's on the driveway between the front gate and the house, but it's about 30m from the front gate and there's plenty of high hedging and trees so it's not particularly noticeable from the road.

I'd say by the letter of the law, its a structure above the 1.2m exemption limit and requires planning but ive never delved too deep into that.

It would be similar to these EV Charging Arms people are recommending in front gardens for people with no off street parking.

Thanks Gumbo. I'll keep that in my pocket and try to get them to paint it dark green so it's not so visually intrusive. It's timber so isn't going to last forever!

I dunno. I'd really rather it wasn't there, we live in a semi rural area and I don't like light pollution, but I try and live and let live.

Painting it to be less visible would cut down the amount of time I spend thinking about how much I dislike it!
