Lads, I'm about to buy a 3k watch from a private seller in Germany, I was pretty sure I'd have no tax implications but the seller seems to think I'll be hit for VAT, the watch was originally bought in Germany last year. Any thoughts ? Thanks

I wouldn’t have thought this would be an issue within the EU.

But, is it private or buying from a business? Why would one non business seller (not vat registered) apply VAT to another EU citizen.

If would be cheaper to fly on a Ryanair flight… give him €3k. Put watch on hand and fly back to Ireland. That’s what you would do if buying from someone from… Cork.

Thanks, it's a private seller, he's not charging me VAT but he seems to think the courier will hit me with charges on delivery, I wouldn't have thought so at all. Like you say I could fly to Cologne and collect the watch for cheaper, I'd rather not though. I'm just really looking for confirmation on who's right.

Am I right that as it's within the EU no charges will apply or is he right that my local Vat rate will apply on delivery ?

Should be no tax implications buying within the EU. I've bought loads of watches from Germany and other European countries with never an issue.
