A family member has been out of work since August 2024 due to a life threatening heart condition from an infection which also resulted in heart surgery. During those months, he has been receiving illness benefit as he was unable to work. Can anyone tell me would he be able to go back to work part time and receive this payment, How would I go about explaining that his capacity to work is restricted?

It’s been a while since I last saw the forms for PCB but they’re long and require a lot of information so you will have to give lots of it. Might be worth speaking to the local Employability service as they would be used to doing them.

AFAIR the form will be assessed and graded into 1 of 4 categories, Mild, Moderate, Serious and Profound (might be different words but that’s the jist of it) There are rumours that if classed in the first 2, IB is at risk but I don’t know that for certain. If in the last 2, straightforward enough. Citizens Info should have the forms and details.

There's only three categories and it determines the level of payment the applicant is entitled to retain and return to work, 50%, 75% or 100% of the current rate of their social welfare payment, assuming they are deemed eligible for PCB.

If applying they have to be either on Illness Benefit for a minimum of 6 months or on Invalidity Pension. They also need the permission of the department before starting to work.

Where they have been on IB beforehand their entitlement to PCB will only be for the remainder of the duration they are entitled to IB - eg a customer (with a minimum of 260 total PRSI contributions at classes A, E, H, or P) in receipt of IB for 12 months already will be entitled to PCB for a further 12 months as the maximum duration of an IB claim is 624 days (2 years)
