Solo and Go

Free awarded. Player takes 2/3 seconds to decide to take the solo and go and is pulled back the ref. Should the referee tell the player to take a traditional free kick, throw ball or award a free kick to the opposition?

    From the updated Rule Book:

Where a Solo and Go is not taken immediately, the free must be taken from the hands or from the ground, at the point where the foul occurred.

I don't see any provision for losing the free if it's not taken immediately, either by way of a throw ball or a free to the other side instead.

So basically, answer to your question seems to be the referee should tell the player to take a 'traditional' free kick instead.

What annoys me with the solo and go sometimes is the player who will put the head down and head off when there is a free man 40 yards up the field. Do they know a ball kicked will move quicker than they will run

Good point, think the players like the new found freedom of it. It has gone from the equivalent of driving in heavy traffic to having a clear straight road to tear at high speed.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Thanks for that. That was my understanding as well but we had a game last night and the solo and go was reversed. Was part of a trilogy of ref mistakes in a 5min spell that cost us 7pts. Ref was still adamant after the game that his interpretation was correct.

The only 2 situations where it should be overturned (without time-wasting or silly off the ball stuff well outside the S&G rules) are Solo And Go'ing it backwards (4.39) or Solo And Go'ing it after indicating to the ref you were taking the free kick (4.38).

From what you've described, and the fact the ref didn't explain the nuances of either of those to your side, it sounds like this was just an error.

A steep learning curve for the ref's too, so sadly a few of these very likely to happen. Especially early in the year.
