Hi, I’d like some recommendations for torches please … have some old basic ones about 15+ years old so I’d like to see where I should go to get some new ones and what i should get.

Primary usage would be very occasional DIY and for home use during potential power outages…..

id like something suitably bright but not blinding and ideally alkaline battery as opposed to USB but that’s not set in stone.

ps…I’d no idea what forum was appropriate for this topic after searching so apologies if it’s not here !

I cant really help on specific recommendations but I have a rechargeable work light for general use. I also have an older hand torch which took "C" batteries during the power outage, it was great once the rechargeable one died. I would also look into a head torch. I got a head torch last year and i use it a lot for those quick 5 minute jobs. its so much easier than using the work light.

Have a look at Screwfix, woodies, or some agri stores to get an idea of pricing and types available.

Lidl Parkside Lamps are great. I got one that runs from mains or can use the standard rectangular rechargeable battery. Same battery that powers other Lidl Parkside DIY devices. They are perfect for the occasional DIY-er like me

If you have cordless power tools you could get a bare unit torch that's the same brand and use the batteries of it.

A head torch is great for DIY stuff also and power outage. USB port charging ones usually the best.

Agree with the Lidl torches very good both the chargeable ones and ones that take batteries.

Make sure it's LED torches you buy anyway your 15+ year old ones probably are not led

A head torch is hands-down the most useful, in my experience. Get one with USB-C charging if you use USB-C for your phones.

Or to light up a room, get a '10W work lamp'.

    The prices though!

I got 2 LedLenser torches in Lidl over the last 2 years:

1 single AAA, single function (on/off) was €5

1 single AA, multi-function and focus was €15

Both great torches which I carry on me every day.

No way the maker would sell them at these prices - I think they were made for Lidl.

Lots of equivalent Chinese torches out there for less than €10 - €20.

I am another Lenser Fan. Yes they cost a bit more but last for ever whereas a lot of the cheaper ones I've had end up with corroded terminals. Two essentials for me. High & Low brightness - I don't want a searchlight when I walk the dog. Beam focussing. So a wide, evenly lit floodlight that focuses into a narrow search beam. The Lenser focusing system is excellent.

Oh a simple switch & not one with lots of pointless modes

Petzl make a huge selection of head torches, they are top quality and will last for years but as always you have to pay for quality - so they're not the cheapest. Very popular with professionals, made in France.
