Is there a device people would recommend to shift to instead? My Nest Protect is about to expire (10 years after manufacturing date). It doesn't seem like the smartest to replace it like-for-like considering this news. Any recommendations for an equivalent that integrates okay with the Google systems?

My three are expiring later on in the year too.

I really liked how they communicated with each other, the heads up before the alarm sounded (they were not a fan of my stir frying in the kitchen) and the gentle nightlight it had was so useful, just enough brightness to avoid walking into furniture but not enough to 'blind' you out of bed.

I will be avoiding more Google or Google backed products as they can't be replied on to be around in the future so have been looking for replacements as well.

So far the best I've seen with similar functionality are the X-Sense combi alarms, though they aren't without their drawbacks as well.

A triple pack of them costs about the same as 1 Nest.

There is a working Hacs integration for Home Assistant (Lars Klint has a good review of this on his YouTube channel) but it is a cloud based custom integration.

Not sure yet if the combi smoke/co2 alarms need a base station.

Balls. Just checked on the Nest app and I have one Nest expiring in a month, the rest in December.

Guess I may be getting one sooner than planned

this is really frustrating, I have 6 hardwired across the house, been great for 8 years. Especially the warnings upstairs from the one in kitchen for example. Only every cooking related but good piece of mind.

I’d be tempted enough to buy 6 new ones while can still probably get them, if could be sure they were going to go another 10 years from purchase.

I don't think you can buy them anymore.

can find them in a lot of shops still in 1s and 2s but no real way of knowing their build date. A lot of mine have 18 months left.

My first Nest will be dead on the 10th July, next two before Xmas

I'm going to order one of those X-sense combi alarms, will wait and see if there are any offers for Prime day. Not using the stove in the living room that the Nest is in atm, so will hopefully be ok for a day or two.

I'm assuming they will continue to work after their replacement date...

No, they start beeping once they hit the date

First Nest died on Thursday, no beeping but no sign of life in it anymore. Nightlight no longer working

Dead on the Nest app but does seem to be communicating on Home Assistant.

Anyways, received an X-sense combi yesterday, will connect it over the weekend.

Might see if I can reuse the Nest case to build a DIY multi sensor later in the year.

They must have programmed a kill switch after the 10 year date. As far as I know the 10 year replacement recommendation is due to the radioactive decay of the sensing element so it should physically still work for years afterwards it just becomes less effective over time (so for safety should no longer be trusted).
