Travel Time Query

I was employed as a field based technician in an engineering role, My company also undertakes project work. A colleague who started the project has left the company and I've been ordered to fill his position approx 1hr30 to 1hr45 away from my home. While on the road, case was give the first 30mins travel to and from work, and to start the clock then, so for a day that involed leaving the house at 7am and returning home at 6pm, the hours logged were 7.30 to 17.30. As i wasnt given another information to the contrary, i logged the hours for my first week on the job as i would on the road, putting in 10 hours for an 11hr day. When the project manager for the role was approving hours for the job, He contacted me to say this was incorrect and to put down a 39hr week, and when i queried the extra travel he told me it wasnt applicable as I have a company van for travel. As the project is technically a construction project, colleague who has their own vehicle get full lodge.

Just wondering if this practice is normal and what peoples opinions are on the matter.

    Thanks
