Replacing the Batteries in a cordless Drill

Hello

I want to replace the batteries in my cordless drill (Very old at this stage and hold no charge at all).

I've gotten replacements but the problem is the batteries are soldered together with small pieces of metal.
My soldering iron will not remove the solder (even at 450), My guess is that that batteries are somehow absorbing the charge from the iron.

Any tips? Should I buy a gas sldering iron?

The problem is the metal, actually nickel, tabs are not soldered on but spot welded. You might be able to remove the tabs with brute force, but you really need a special spot welder (not cheap) to reattach them.

Was just thinking, wouldn't it be dangerous to go near batteries with something hot ... is that not an explosion risk ?

As usual with Ali Express, nobody has actually reviewed the functionality of that device, they only validated that it arrived to them and looks ok?!

I've read a few guides on doing this and amongst other things there were some reviews of cheap spot welders which were less than positive. You might get lucky though!

BTW one suggested way of removing the existing welds was to use a multi tool with a round burr to grind out the spot weld.

Why are you removing the welds and wiring from the old batteries at all?

Surely makes far more sense to rewire with new wires and solder? Just cut the wires on the old batteries and reuse plastic chassis.

I was going to reusethe tab, but now since I have order the battery spot welder thing I think I wont need to. Should be all good.

Be very careful with soldering iron near the batteries. As previously mentioned they do not like excessive heat and can easily combust spectacularly.

The spot welder heats the contacts to a high temperature very briefly which is sufficient to weld them together. Soldering iron puts heat into the battery for too long which will not end well!
