    Hi,

I would appreciate any comments or feedback on my queries below:

I very recently got fibre broadband installed via Sky (500 mb package - coming from a 20 mb DSL connection prior to now).

So I have a box on my wall (which I believe is my ONT?)

This is connected to my Sky router by network cable.

    Query 1:

I plan to carry out some home refurbishment works which may give opportunity to run several cat6 cables to other areas of the house (to main TV, and a few ceiling mounted access points).

My plan is to get an 8port PoE switch, some access points and network cabling as per below.

    https://www.freetv.ie/poe-network-switches/

    https://www.freetv.ie/wireless-ap/

    https://www.freetv.ie/cat6-cable-100m/

Am I right in assuming this is the equipment required and that the following straight forward plan will work?:

(Existing) ONT → (Existing) Sky router → Switch → Access points and TV point

In the above setup, can I leave my Sky router as it is and use it as its own access point without changing any settings etc?

    Query 2:

It's early days with 500 mb fibre but some occasions when running speed tests, I get high wifi speeds of 350 mbps but more frequently it's down at low speeds of 30 mbps (even within a metre of the router). Any obvious reason for this? Do I need to query with Sky?

    Many thanks for your help.

    Hi,

Just thought I would give this a bump to see if there are any suggestions/feedback.

    Thanks

Feedback is that isn't going to be a mesh. But that's just terminology. You don't need a mesh and access points wired back to a router are imo a better solution.

With a mesh your wireless access points are in contact with each other which gives some advantages with roaming between AP's. Fully wired work almost the same because most wifi devices will connect to the strongest signal as you move around.

I've set up similar for people and almost exclusively used TP-Link AP's in their Omada range. Can't fault these https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-Wireless-Controller-Software-EAP110/dp/B01LRQW0GM

Not sure I'd get a PoE switch of an unknown brand? I'd also consider getting a 16 port as ports soon get used up.

Wake me up when it's all over.
