Possible multiple pensions ?

I am mid 40’s and have sailed through life with no pension ……..as far as i know.

I have been in full time employment for 20 years (including 3 years in Australia).

Are all pensions “opt in” or is it possible at all that i had a mandatory pension through an employer that i have forgotten about ?

    If so,
Is there any way to check if i have any history of paying into a pension ?

I am not great with finances. I accept full responsibility for my lack of understanding around my own finances , but i am trying to get better.

I have no recollection of actively having a pension but at the same time i would like to be certain. I have been offered a 5% contributory pension with my new employer so will be availing of that.

    Any helpful advice is appreciated.

    Thanks

You would have 3 years worth of a pension in Australia. If your not a permanent resident or an Aussie citizen you can claim it back right now if you want.

Well in which countries did you work? Generally speaking if you worked in the EEA you would be able to max out contributions to pillar one pensions (for Ireland the state pension).

worked in ireland for 17 years , am irish.

Worked for about 6 different companies in that time.
I just legitimately can’t recall if i ever availed of a pension or not.

    Any statements i don’t have.

    Do you have payslips?

They would show any pension deductions.

If you had pensions in Ireland in the past it is extremely likely that you would have received a hell of a lot of paper correspondence from them at the time.

You could check back with each employer if you wanted to be sure.

What kind of jobs were they?

Generally, white collar jobs with established employers have a far better chance of having a pension scheme that blue collar or hospitality or tech startups.
