Hookless Rims and Tubeless - something to moan about

I have bl**dy carbon hookless rims set up as tubeless that came with my TCR.

After seeing a nasty spill close to the final of Kuurne Brussels Kuurne when it looked like the tubeless trye blew off the rim, I'm of a mind to swap them out for traditional hooked rims and clinchers.

I wish manufacturers would just keep things simple, I'm especially looking at you Giant!

Anyone with good/bad experiences of the hookless setup on road bikes. Should I keep them or write them off?

I’ve been riding hookless for two years.

    Year 1 clinchers at 80psi

    Year 2 tubeless at 75/80

No issues with either set up but tubeless is way better & faster. I’m not a light rider so it’s alot of force throwing the bike around bends and no issues or wobbles to date.

As with anything on a bike though it only needs to go wrong once.

If you are writing off a set of SLR1 I’ll give them a good home and send you postcards of them safe & sound.

Good to hear your experiences. I'm a glass half empty type of person so the one time only wrong event speaks to me.

Do you mind me asking what tubeless tyres you run with and do you carry an inner tube with you as backup if you can't reinflate the tubeless tyre after say a puncture.

GP5000 STR & yes a tube with a handy like snips thing to get the valve off if needs be.

You could use vittoria airliners - they'll stop a complete blow out as I understand them. I use them, but on hooked rims for the ride flat for racing - save's messing and/or carrying a tube and pump racing unsupported. Downside is you can't put a tube in if you have a puncture that won't seal/ plug - but you have the ride flat to get you home.

Hookless were always a bit of a con imo - they do make things simpler, but only for the rim manufacturer!

Using them a few years now and never an issue, have slr1, slr2 and also use hookless on the gravel bike at 35psi ish and trust them completely, always bring plugs and a spare tube just in case.

I don't know anyone who has had issues.

Sorry to hijack this tread but I've a TCR with SLR1 wheels. I have Giant Gavia Course tyres in 25's but would like to move to 28's maybe 30's. According to the Giant website you are a bit restricted on what tyres you can use.

Any recommendations for Irish roads - the main use will be for local riding, odd local race.

For some reason I can't get on the Giant website but I recall seeing a list of tyres Giant certified as Hookless Tubless compatible. Like you, I still have the stock 25 Giant tyres on my SLR2s.

At a guess you probably won't go wrong with the compatible Conti 5000 tyres. I think they do an All Season version and have read that there is enough clearance on the recent TCRs for 32s.

I've 28mm on the slr's with lower pressure than the 25mm find them way more comfortable, the conti work ok as well.

Also personally I think the 28mm are faster when racing because I feel more comfortable on rougher roads.

I'm using 28 schwalbe pro ones on my slr 1 at about 66/68psi tubeless and not had any issues in about 8000km, plenty of fast racing trying to catch back onto packs downhill too
