How do I get my C1 license back

I converted my full EU driving license into an Irish one back in 1996. In the process I lost my C1 license. I kept my AM license. I didn't even notice at the time or if I did, I didn't think much of it as I didn't ever expect to drive a vehicle over 3.5 tonne

How can I get my C1 license back?

You got one automatically even in Ireland when you passed your B test before 1997. But no, I have no proof, they took my license off me when I got the Irish one back in 1996

I know, I have one too. But just wondering have you got some physical proof. I'm guessing not, so you'll probably have to get on to the NDLS. Your driver number should help I suppose.

Yes, that would be if you never had a C1 and you would not have to do the CPC stuff (case studies and walk around) if you only wanted the C1 for non-commercial driving. E.G. for a motorhome.

I did not know that you automatically got C1 prior to 1997. I would imagine that anyone going looking to have that reinstated on their licence would now be told 'sorry more than 10 years have elapsed'.

Given the time lapse, I'm not sure if you can get it back. There have been various deadlines for getting 'grandfathered' entitlements marked up over the years, after which it's a case of tough ****.

Work colleague had to do the full C test again because he let he's C category laps for more then 20 years, he didn't even notice renewing car licence it wasn't added, so had to the lessons and CPC then test, wasn't cheap but he was lucky the boss paid for it

You have to renew your truck license every 5 years now with up todate CPC.

On a serious note, if it's just for a personal vehicle, you don't need to do the CPC, I got my C1 a few years ago without it.

I passed my B category before 97 and never got the C1, my theory is you had to be over 21 for that to apply.

Could be right my wife passed her driving test in 91 she was 27 and automatically got the C1.

I had a C1 licence on my UK driving licence when I passed my test before '97. When I transferred to an Irish licence, I lost my C1, but I rang the DVLA recently and was told I could reclaim it under the grandfather rule, provided I got a medical cert. I never followed through with it, as I don’t need it, but I hate losing something you once had. At least I still have the trailer category (B+E), Out of curiosity, was 'scoop' referring to a lapsed C1 in Ireland?"

Yes work colleague born in Ireland it was a lapsed C1 licence, not sure if you got the C1 automatically in Ireland as you did in UK, he was told only option to do test again which he did , he has full C now as I have just the C1 .

Was in the NDLS in Citywest today and that was pretty much it. Over 10 years elapsed and they can't re-instate it. Even though they admitted it was likely their fault. So that is the end of it then. Thanks everyone for their contributions here

It's not correct that C1 was awarded if you passed your B test before 1997 in Ireland. IIRC the cutoff year was 1989.

I did my B test post 89 and pre 97 and have never had C1 on mine.

Only going by what I googled. I did my B test in '86 and I do vaguely remember I got a lot of categories alright, more than just B, AM and W. Just didn't pay attention when I swapped for an Irish license in '96. The only reason I did the swap was that non-Irish licenses were very hard to get insurance for (and way more expensive)

I think 1997 was the cutoff for the UK giving extra categories but Ireland was 1989. as you did your test in 1986 and had the extra categories it's not as though the Irish authorities can use the date of your test as the reason not to give you back your C1. They probably have other reasons though.

The reason is it expired more than ten years ago. Same as any licence.
