We just bought a new car from Dealership, the car was a show-car parked in the show room of the dealership with mileage of just 22km and never road taxed. We bought it as a used car. However our nightmare started since we picked it up from dealership.

The car broke down on the road just 1 hour after we picked it up, the battery was dead. We had to call roadside assistance to jump start it, and then there were many warnings like Engine Malfunction, Hybrid System Malfunction, Battery Malfunction shown up on the car system. The car was still drivable and we drove the car for 200Km to let the battery fully charged, and the second day all the warnings were gone.

But on the third day, there were severe warnings shown on the car system: Electric Leakage in Hybrid System, Hybrid System Malfunction. Then the car broke down on the road again, and also the 12 volt battery was dead again 30mins after the broke down, the car could not drive, could not be locked!

That's what we have experienced with our new car in the first 4 days! Also we did some research on the warnings shown on our car, actually there are tons of same issues happening in the US, some of the owners had to spend 4-9 weeks waiting for their cars to be repaired, and some of them have had the car repaired again 6 months later for the same issue! Total nightmare!

Our car now has been in the garage for diagnosis for couple days. It's not our fault that my car broke down, it's possible that our car will need to stay in the garage for a long time. And we now have to communicate back and forth between the dealer, the manufacturer, the roadside-assistance company, and the rental car company to get a replacement car because we need a car every single day! It's all a nightmare! We are thinking about if we need to give up on this new car, we have the purchase invoice and contract of the car. There was not anyone mentioned any problems or defects with the car before we bought it! We are now looking for some help to end this nightmare! Please share some related knowledge with us if you could. Thank you very much! much appreciated!

What's the make and model of the car?

You will have to let them attempt to fix the issue first. We don’t have Lemon Law in Ireland. Thats USA.

Doesn’t normal consumer legislation apply? You can cancel your purchase and get a full refund when a fault occurs within 30 days of receiving the goods (the case for second hand goods).

Having it enforced is another matter…

Two of your biggest purchases, your home and your car have less protection around their purchase than a toaster you buy in DID. Enforcement of consumer protection is very good around electrical goods but all too often your home (look at Donegal pyrite) and cars have little or no enforcement. The dealer has to be allowed fix it but no timeframe will be stated.

Ive seen errors like that on the Prius where they were all caused by the 12v battery being toast, a replacement resolved it. About a €150 to €250 replacement depending on the brand you get.

Was the 12v battery replaced by the dealer? With a car sitting idle in a showroom it can't be in good condition.

I think a lot of hybrids can suffer from this. Very simple fix.

I can confirm that I got loads of scary messages from my hybrid car when its 12v battery failed.

A new battery fully resolved everything.
