I work relief milking and general farm work here locally. I want to change from my current private car to a me owned crew cab 4x4. As I move around several outffarms herding, I carry the odd tools and feed for my employer , my own social domestic is also necessary. He throws me the odd fuel expenses for use of my vehicle.

I assume this is OK, don't want to get mad quotes..

Unclear what the question is. Do you mean Insurance cost?

Can you clarify if you are a self employed contractor or directly employed by one person? Most policies cover use in connection with YOUR business (not your employers) If you are a contractor, it should be handy enough, though insurers don't love crewcabs because of the additional social use and exposure to more injury claims from passengers

Both the insurance and tax can be difficult when owning a crew cab personally. I have one, but it's owned by my company.

You can apply for a flock number to get around the tax issue. You'd have to insure it personally.

As you are driving for work and carrying other people's goods you need to get courier insurance, if you don't carry your bosses goods you still need commercial insurance as you are driving as part of your job.

Since you said your own social and domestic use the motor tax will be in the thousands.

Of course you can wing it and you'll get away with the tax, but if there is a big claim the insurance company will make sure you were correctly insured before they pay.

Thanks lads.... I am employed casually , short weeks and seasonally but long term. I wanted to buy crew cab myself and use it to get to my varied place of works with tools and materials for my employed job and personal social use

I got all your answers, it seems it's possible but you are suggesting the high tax or insurance cost makes it a non runner..... Money is tight for farm workers, so while I could stomach the purchase price, costs and fuel would probably eat too much into wages and expenses to make it worthwhile..

From what you say, I think a lot of lads here are flying blind....I don't want that ...
