Creda storage heater output flap

I know there have been many posts on this topic but I cant find the answer to my specific question.

I have a TSR18CW - 79358S in a flat I have just taken over. At first it seemed to be hugely inefficient as it sucked energy in the night and gave off all the heat through the morning by lunchtime. Regardless of the output setting.

I opened and adjusted the screw on the bi-metal strip to close the flap which was wide open regardless of the position of the output dial. Now it does much better at storing the heat through the day and gives off a gentle warmth all day. This is better, but I'd still like to get the output dial to actually do something in terms of opening and closing the flap to have better control. Can anyone explain what is the mechanism by which it is supposed to do that? It is not mechanical but seems to be controlled by the bi-metal strip. During daytime operation is the output dial meant to regulate some heating current to the bi-metal strip to open it? is there some way to calibrate the correct position for the adjustment screw. I seem to be stuck with open or closed and cant detect any movement of the flap in response to the dial.

Advice appreciated. I was about to throw it away, but got some encouragement now that I can see it can actually store the heat fairly well and not lose it all by lunchtime.

    Thanks

    Bob
