Are vw models/trims like-for-like comparable? e.g. in Ireland we have Trendline, Comfortline, Highline etc. Are there direct UK, international equivalents? In the UK I see S, SEL, SEL Premium and others. Are there irish versions of these?

Depends on the market. Japan uses Trendline, Comfortline, and Highline like us but they come with slightly different options. The UK have a different naming structure and similar options to Ireland but probably not identical, just similar.
It used to be
S = Trendline
SE = Comfortline
GT = Highline
But now the name structure is a bit different so I’m not sure
