First ebike

I would like to get a nice ebike for going to work which is a good 20km each way. but also would like to use it for other activities.

I have normal bikes but this would be my first ebike.

I love the look and spec of this one but it doesn't appear to be road legal in Ireland. I wouldn't mind getting it registered and all that if it was worth it.

So I'm thinking of this bike as an alternative

anyone have any suggestions and or experience in getting higher powered bikes in Ireland over the 250w threshold?

Or any suggestions of a good bike to get.

The latter weighs about 34kg so is a monster. The former weighs even more. Unless you specifically need to use it on very bad ground, you're buying weight you don't need

Good point, would you have any recommendations?

are you making use of the cycle to work scheme? would be good to get an idea of budget.

Yes I'd be making use of the cycle to work scheme, but anything in and around 2k or under

if your employer will deal with decathlon, that's somewhere you could go to do some research anyway.

but the likes of trek and giant have bikes within your range - e.g. the trek dual sport, and the benefit is you'll be able t obuy them from established bike shops here, rather than online with limited support.

40km a day is a tough life for any bike or ebike. I used to do 50km a day - 250km a week. That bike died with 36k km on it. When it died it was like triggers broom, only the frame was original. The motor had been rebuilt and the battery replaced. All parts were well passed their design life I’d imagine. It’s the wear parts that get you, hubs, chains, cassettes, brake pads - I learned to fix everything myself because I needed the bike the next day to get to work. Therefore it makes sense to get a bike for which parts can be bought easily, that means mainstream brands. I’ve bought 2 cube e-bikes, both with Bosch mid-drive motors, First one never left me stranded. 2nd has but it was a bike shop build issue rather than a part failure. Parts are readily available from shops in Ireland or from online as they’re mostly similar to normal bike parts. If you need a new wheel for a Fiido or engue you’re going to be waiting…..

Otherwise I have found that you need the following if commuting a lot on an ebike:

    • wired in lights, I supplement with usb lights but the always on bike lights are a godsend.
    • Mudguards are essential
    • Rack and panniers.
    • Decathlon waterproof pants with integrated shoe covers.

important to try a few bikes, see what you can live with and also to get used to the 25kph cutoff of power assistance

If your budget can stretch to it, I highly recommend either the Giant Roam E or the Giant Explore models.

I previously worked for a Giant bike shop and they both stood out for me as excellent e-bikes.

Decathlon just launched a respectable looking hardtail commuter for 999e
