Curious to know - how many rounds did you play last year, or how many are you planning on playing this year?

Last year was an exception for me where I had time off work, so was able to play 100 rounds!

This year, hoping to get in at least 20-30.

Over 40 including midweek 9 hole comps. Dont have kids and play through the winter where I can, also try travel to a few SC's around me in the summer, so it stacks up fast. Funnily enough, most of my counting scores from last year were not on my own course

I played 60 counting rounds last year and easily 20+ practice rounds.

But the majority would only have been 9 holes.

If we are including practice rounds then definitely 80+, counting rounds last year was 44, not to mention matchplays, interclubs or team comps, non counting winter rounds would easily add another 30 or so and a healthy number of midweek evening 9 or 12 holes during the summer.

Not sure I'll manage quite as many this year but I'll be doing my best.

I'd 22 rounds last year which was an exceptional year for me. I went back playing again in 2019 and 2024 was the first year I had over 15. I'd love to know how good I'd be if I got to play once a week. I'd say there's a good chance I wouldn't be much better, that I'm pretty much at my level.

I played 17 counting rounds but with other types of golf out there, team golf, casuals, etc, id be hitting 40 rounds handy enough

I suppose it kinds of depends on what the levels are that you play too. I was as low as 2.2 back maybe 15 years ago, but I was easily playing twice a week, young, no kids etc. As I got older, and time on the course is a fraction of that, it definitely affected my game. Now, I'm like yourself, I get out around 15 times a year, and I just know there's parts of my game that'll be rusty for the first few holes. Driving, putting and chipping. I know Ill lose 6 to 8 shots from those areas through the front 9.

I would say I average a round a week over the course of the year, more during the summer, 2 every Boards weekend for example, but we count on our course from March to October Bank Holiday weekend. I had 35 counting rounds last year.

Now I definitely go at least once a week to practice from when the hour goes forward to the when goes back.

I don't play too much counting rounds...but play lots of casual golf ..Much prefer shorter formats of golf. 6, 9, 12 holes..

Not a fan of 4 ball 4.5 hour stuff. This is 90 % of competition set ups.

I'm an outlier ..love golf, but not golf format I'm around.

In a normal year I'd typically average about 30 counting singles rounds. The last two years have been pretty shocking weatherwise so wouldn't have got near that - I only had 18 counting rounds last year. These days there'd be every chance I wouldn't play at all from November to March, not much love for slogging around in the mud /wind / rain, I did all that as a kid !! Went to the range at the weekend and it was the first time to touch a club since November, and it showed 🤣 In the summer though I'd try to get up once a week for 6/9 holes in the evening after work (circumstances and weather permitting of course) which wouldn't be part of the counting rounds. No better feeling than pulling into the car park on a nice Thursday evening and only seeing maybe 10 cars there so you know you can take your time and do a bit of chipping and putting on your way round !

Well I was never anything like a 2.2. 11 is the best I've gotten to, but I've never really gotten to play much as an adult.

But when I get to play a few times in quick succession - maybe more than once a fortnight for a couple of months I find confidence sets in and replaces concentration. So when I haven't played in a while I'll successfully concentrate on things that will help me hit the ball better (and one of these thoughts is keeping my head steady. I know this is the devils advice, but the effect of thinking of it for me is that is reduces me coming up with my backswing, then down at the top of my swing and out so that I don't hit a mile before the ball, but then obviously I end up with a massive slice). So my driving can get worse with regular play. But it's offset with an improved short game, in particular the half swings.

But I dream of a year when I get to play pretty much once a week. Maybe when the kids are a bit older I'll get to reserve an evening a week for golf. I'd love to get down to single figures while I feel I still can. I got a new smart watch recently and went for a couple of runs with it. It has some fancy triple lock GPS which I thought must be broken because the times I was running did not match with what I had thought I was running. Back about 8 years ago, I used to play hurling and train twice a week. Very different to running training, but I could do a 5k in about 22 minutes. I wondered when I gave up hurling if I actually trained for 5ks could I get one below 20. Whereas now, I'm going to have a job to get back down below 25. And with the age I'll be before I can actually train twice a week or the like and eat properly, I'll never get back to 22, let alone try for 20. I just wonder will I be 50 by the time I get to actually give it a go. I know there's loads of 50 year old scratch players, but they're way more talented than I am. Who knows what my body will not let me do at that stage.

30 counting rounds last year with the first of those on May 11.

Had a knee injury so didn't play at all from Nov 23 to April 24 and only broke 80 twice, shot in the 90s once with all the rest being in the 80s.

HI has now drifted out to 10.0 from a low of 6.9 two years ago. I hope to get back to single figures this year and most importantly stay injury free.

Have already played 7 Winter rounds this year (13 holes placing everywhere) getting out twice this week and can feel the benefit especially around the greens.

played 64 games last year after a quick check on my Garmin

not all full rounds, but most probably were.

I missed golf till end April also due to operation so would have been a fair bit more. would say it might have been the most I played in a single year but I never really counted before

81 qualifying rounds in 2024 on gui

Interclub non qualifying and any casual rounds not on there. So about 100 for me.

Wow thought I'd played a lot more but only 28 counting competitions according to GUI. You could add another 40 midweek rounds so about 70 in total.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 400 ✭✭Break80

48 counting rounds for me last year.

With casual and non counting that number is easily 70 I would think.

I recently reached my 6th decade on this planet. 2.5 hour drive home after a 5.5 hour round last Saturday really took it out of me. Played 18 Sunday, got home and went to bed.

It's a pain getting old but I'm not a fan of the alternative either.

Family, work, commitments is tough for younger guys. The problem is, when those pressures ease the stamina goes a bit as you get older.

    You're a mere youth @Break80 😀

I agree with all you've said.

I'm in my 7th decade now. However, I'm also playing off my lowest handicap in 4 decades of playing golf.

A good night's sleep and a bit of stretching before and after is all you need.
