    hello.

I’d like to dispute a 48 hour ban imposed on me for the following post:

    Peter DragonFeb 9, 2025

I understand the host’s accent is now not a matter we can comment on - does that extend to Funny Friday where he puts on silly accents, or does his camp voice?

As for accents, I personally feel that presenters accents should be as neutral as possible - and I say this with an equal aversion to any strong accent, be it decidedly rural or decidedly D4 - but if it is deemed we cannot comment on this then fine.

I do have to ask though if he cones out with things like the previously quoted line about “going down the Liffey on a doughnut” or engages in shall we say unusual, unique, and/or incorrect phrasing, grammar, tenses - are these are also not for discussion?

I’m asking as this is the national broadcaster and at the risk of sounding like a snob I believe there are certain standards that should be met when it comes to the diction, grammar, and delivery of presenters.

This is a thread I rarely visit but I would appreciate any clarity that can be given on this matter for future reference should I decide to post here. Thank you.

I have tried to reach a resolution with the mod concerned but to no avail.

I made no specific comment on Mr. Duffy’s accent - or indeed any other presenters.

I also stated that I understand we can no longer comment on the host’s accent in my opening sentence and acceded to this.

Any comment I made was deliberately general in nature to avoid any accusation of bias in either direction re. accents.

I did express a personal preference that accents be as neutral as possible, but that’s all that was - a personal preference - it was not derogatory nor did it comment on anyone’s accent. I’m not asking for “posh” accents either btw, indeed I clarified this with my D4 comment

My question was also not on accents, it was on grammar, diction, “unique” phrasings etc.

None of the above are related to the host’s accent.

The overall thrust of my post was to sincerely ask for clarity on an area of vagueness in the new rules. Again, I understand we cannot comment on host’s accents and I haven’t done that.

I’m not trying to be awkward, I’m quite literal as a person and was just asking for clarity here - ironically to avoid a potential ban..

I was polite in my questioning and was simply seeking clarity.

I feel it incredibly harsh to be warned and banned from the thread when I have acted in good faith on this and was simply seeking clarity to avoid a future misstep and potential ban.

There is clearly a lot of ambiguity regarding the new rules in radio as evidenced by the large number of questions on this topic at present. It seems unduly harsh to penalise posters asking questions in good faith like I have.

The mod said I asked these questions already in another thread. I didn’t. I asked questions in a different thread on a different matter. I did not ask these questions.

Please note I have also been trying to make this appeal since yesterday and have been considerably delayed in doing so by being unable to access this thread. The radio mod seemed unaware that if you are in jail you cannot access this thread and it’s taken over 24 hours to gain access. Had my ban been 24 hours I wouldn’t even have able to appeal in time - which is frankly, bonkers. I would like this to be considered as part of my appeal.

Honestly, if I can’t appeal a ban in a timely manner it should at least be paused if not completely rescinded. This can’t be seen as fair given the circumstances.

    Thank you.

Your ban is short and moderators are volunteers. Even if you had posted this yesterday there's no guarantee someone would have seen it until today, or even tomorrow anyway.

I will call a Category Moderator to review this, but you will have to be patient and wait for them to review it.

Thank you, I’m new to this whole thing and this is my first time appealing but I did contact the DR mod last night and only got access to this forum in the last hour - which seems an excessive delay. Had my ban been 24 hours it would have expired before my appeal was heard - which kind of defeats the purpose of appealing.

This is not a criticism, just an observation.

@Peter Dragon I am going to deal with this for you, due to the time limit on the warning.

I have read your contributions and have decided to uphold the warning. New moderators have been appointed to the forum following a long period where the forum was undermoderated. New rules have been outlined by these moderators and a feedback thread was set up.

The post you were warned for was questioning mod instruction on thread which is considered off-topic. It was also very lengthy discussing a topic the moderators have outlined was no longer up for discussion.

The moderators had made it clear with a number of on thread notices, a new charter announcement, and the creation of a feedback thread that rules in the forum were changing. In this instance I am upholding the warning and ask you to familiarise yourself with the new posting guidelines before you continue to post.

I’m sorry but that is neither true nor fair.

There is a difference between “accent” and the topics I have asked for clarity on. I understand Joe Duffy’s accent is not for discussion and I am not asking for permission to do so, nor did I do so in that post.

I’m also not questioning mod instruction - far from it. I have simply asked for clarity on commentary on aspects such as diction, grammar, and the host’s unique phraseology etc. None of those are accent related.

I’ll again state I’m not alone in trying to understand where the line is here given the large number of queries on the feedback threads.

Can I ask for someone else to have a look at this please?

Ask for clarity on the feedback thread. It is off-topic and questioning moderator instruction on thread which is against the rules in every forum.

The thread is for discussion of the show. Any questions or feedback should be kept to the feedback thread.

Noted re. feedback thread - I’ll go there in future.

But where did I question moderator instruction? Can you please show me where I have done this?

May I further ask can I ask the question re. diction, grammar, and phraseology then in the feedback thread for the proposes of clarity and will this be clarified by the mods there?

Again I maintain there remains a lot of confusion regarding there new rules - I don’t think asking for clarity on these should be met with bans. I haven’t been rude or disrespectful in asking for this clarity and have done so in good faith. I have been accused of “looking for loopholes” which is not what I am trying to do - I’m simply seeking clarity, clarity which will ultimately be of benefit to all users (not just me).

The moderators cannot outline every single scenario in the charter. Guidelines are put down.

The forum charter has asked that the content of the show be discussed rather than comments about the presenter's accent. If you can find a way to discuss what the presenter is talking about without taking digs or being a dick about it you should be ok. If you are being a dick the moderators will pull let you know.

I am not going to provide a list of things it's ok to say or not say, because such a list would be impossible. It will also lead to posters saying something else and then arguing that it's ok to say that particular thing because it's not on the list (looking for loopholes).

Carry on as normal with the thread, but please try to discuss the content of the show rather than pages and pages of "hilarious" posts using "de" instead of "the" or "dey' instead of "they".

I've gone back through the thread and the vast majority of the posters are capable of discussing the content of the show without commenting on the presenters accent. I suggest you read some of those posts and follow suit.

I will close this dispute now as it is resolved. Any further questions you have regarding the forum should be posted in the Radio feedback thread.
