How do I open these ceiling lights?

I’ve tried twisting them anti-clockwise and clockwise (while wearing grippy gloves) pulling them downwards, and sticking a flathead screwdriver into the little gap on the side to see if there was a latch that needed to be pressed, but nothing seems to work. I also asked my Dad to try and he had no luck either. I want to change the lightbulb, so any help appreciated!

Try twisting slowly clockwise or anti clockwise whilst pulling downwards.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it’s not budging when I twist, and I’m afraid if I pull downwards with too much force the part that’s screwed into the ceiling will become loose

Is this in a bathroom by any chance?

It looks very like a light I done recently. The white part should come off easily enough first and then you need a small magnetic Philip's screwdriver to unscrew 4 tiny little screws and the light will come down. If it is the light I am thinking of and it's not working it's a whole new light that you will need as it's a LED light. No bulb to replace.

have a look around the edges where the fitting meets the ceiling. They’ll be 1 or 2 slots

You need to insert a flat screwdriver to release the grip whilst pulling down the white diffuser ring.

There’s one in the kitchen and one in the bathroom, if it is an LED light that needs replacing that’s good to know because it’s a cold white light and I wanted to change it to a warm light bulb so might need to rethink that!

That's too old to be an LED. You need to release the grip with a flat screwdriver in the slot shown.
