I think I like the old Bergerace more, with John Nettles.

The reworking didn't work for me. It could have been called anything and set anywhere. Damien Molony was poor in the part.

Haven’t watched yet but based on the trailer it looked generic itv crime drama fare. I was a kid when RTE showed Bergerac but it was atmospheric, had a sense of place and John Nettles nailed the part. , it’s just a trailer but I didn’t get any sense of this from this one.

I watched it - it was instantly forgettable. It wasn't shot in Jersey so lacked atmosphere, the iconic car (MG) is in it, but the actor can't drive it (insurance won't let him!), and I reckon the only reason Molony was picked is because he looks a bit like John Nettles!

Wouldn't be racing back to season 2

Edit: oops, got my classic car wrong - it's a Triumph, not an MG!

There certainly were scenes in Jersey that I recognised but it still didn't capture the atmosphere of Jersey.

    A quick Google confirms this.

    • St Brelade's Bay.
    • Gorey pier.
    • Driftwood Café on Archirondel Beach.
    • Royal Square in St Helier.
    • Victoria College grounds.
    • La Pulente restaurant, which doubled for the The Jersey Club.
    • St Ouen's Bay and La Rocco Tower.
    • Central Market.

Thanks Jim, I'd read somewhere that it was filmed in Devon.

No, it was never filmed in Devon. I think parts of the series were filmed in London or in France, depending on what was happening. If it wasn't Jersey, it would have been one of the other islands, Guernsey, Alderney or maybe Sark?

As far as I know, the majority of the locations was always Jersey.

The older gerneration, like myself asociates John Nettles with Jersey even though he isn't from Jersey. He was born in Cornwall. There is also a documentary called "The Channel Islands at War".

    i haven't seen the 2025 version and I don't think I want to.

I can't imagine anyone replacing John Nettles. Or Terence Alexander.

The original Bergerac was such a classic …. the theme music is going around in my head here 😊.

John Nettles was a real heart throb and the location was fab. My first trip "abroad" was to Jersey so I got a kick out of seeing familiar places.

I'd give it 5 out of 10. Not dreadful but ultimately pretty forgettable. I wasn't a fan of the whole obsessive cop on the edge angle. Not only has it been done to death but its been done better by other shows. I thought Molony was ok. To be fair he nailed the English accent pretty well. It only slipped a couple of times. But I'd take John Nettles over him any time. Don't think I'll bother with the second series.

Adrian Edmondson and Lesley Sharp are joining the cast for series 2.

Hard to improve on the original with John Nettles. It was of it's time . . . . .

I think the new version suffered from just having 1 main storyline/crime stretched out over the series. I'm aware that they don't make longer series anymore for various reasons but a variety of self - contained stories might have helped. The lead actor was ok - just not that engaging.

I don't remember watching the original that often (possibly my mother didn't think it suitable viewing!) but watch it when it's on U & Drama or whatever nowadays.

There is nothing in the new series that makes it Bergerac, except the lead character's name. It could have been set, or shot, anywhere. And, Bergerac's personal demons were just unnecessary filling.
