Who would fix a broken dehumidifier?

    I have a Meaco 20L dehumidifier that seems to run (allows air through as normal), but no water comes out in the collecting tray. It’s not a troubleshooting issue like the room is low humidity or something like that.


    It’s out of warranty and to get it fixed with the company I bought off would be 150 minimum when the entire unit cost 300 new. They won’t touch it if I try to fix myself first. It’s approaching prices where I should maybe just get a new one. I’ve only had it 3 years so whatever the issue it can’t be a huge one I would have thought.


    Any recommendations for someone who could fix/ take a look? I’m not sure if there are any appliance fixing guys around anymore. It’s nearly always cheaper to dump it and get something new. I’d give it a go to fix it myself but I’m not confident.

    From a quick google, it seems if the filter is blocked, it could explain why the tray is not collecting water. So cleaning and/or replacing the filter could fix it.

    Whenever an appliance like that goes and is out of warranty, I always have a go at fixing it myself, and you would be surprised what can be made work with very little effort. The internet is a huge help in this regard as parts for practically anything can usually be found. At this stage my kindle is a bit like Triggers sweeping brush it has had so many of its parts replaced.

    You can often find a disassembly video on youtube, which will walk you through how to disassemble it. Then you can take a multimeter to the different parts and try to ascertain which part is not working.

    If it's a case of putting it in the bin any way, you might as well take the back off it and have a look.

    Thanks for the response Lambshank. I wish it was as simple as a filter replacement tbh but I think you're right on the money about trying to fix it myself.

    I have the exact same dehumidifier and the same problem. It's a common fault on them.

    I opened it up and found all the refrigerant fluid was leaking from the compressor. The smell is kind of sweety.

    Talked to a friend who is a refrigerator engineer and he said it probably needs a new compressor and then top up the refrigerant again. €150 is about the cost of it, but probably better put towards a new one.

    New ones are now closer to €400, but you get a 5 year warranty, the older ones didn't come with that warranty.
