Use for old Core i3 desktops

    Hi all,

tldr - I've got a load of HP & Dell Core i3 desktops that I want to find a new home for, but nobody wants them - before I dump them, any other ideas I could try?

Long story, my father was involved in reconditioning older PCs to send to schools he Africa, but he passed away last year and we can't get in touch with the contact he had. So I've got a lot of old stock that I need to clear out.

I've tried local schools but they don't want desktops, only laptops

I've tried Rehab & Camara who usually take PC donations, but i3 is lower spec than they want to take.

There is probably 200 PC's, and due to WEE etc, it looks like I need to pay for them to be disposed of, and is looking like the only route now.

Even if fixing these up were an option here, I don't really have the bandwidth to do this, so looking for a way to give away or donate 20 or 50 of these at a time, or more.

Is there any other groups (clubs, non-profits etc) that would be able to make use of these PC's?

Any other uses for older stock like this?

Hope this doesn't break any rules, I'm not looking for money, just don't like to see this kind of thing get dumped.

    Thank you

How old exactly? What kinds of cases are they in? Are they standard boards and PSUs?

There's still lots of uses for them, as home build NASs if they can take a few drives. Or a machine to mess around with Linux on. These things don't need much CPU grunt for these things.

Home media servers are a great use for older machines. You can probably sell them online for just that if the price is right

Lots of 2012 era, HP Compaq 6200 Pro Microtower, and some similar HP Compaq 6200 Small Form Factor

    Sorry for your loss.

If you make a post about this in the Linux forum, you might get a few takers.

I also think people in the IoT forum would go for them as home assistant boxes. I certainly would.

Check for interest in the Home Assistant thread and if so, post about it in its own thread.

To help you move them along, you could suggest a minimum collection of 5 or 10.

Recycling 200 machines is definitely going to be charged as commercial, but if it's 20 people recycling 4-9 it would be simpler.

If you get interest, it's probably best to put an ad on adverts.ieand link that to the IoT and Linux forums.
