Apologies if already done to death but just wondering what are people's opinions on of petrol/diesel hybrid plug in? Are they worth it/economical?

Currently have a Leaf 40kw and although it's grand, the range anxiety gets me. Having do do more longer journeys than previously expected and having to factor in extra time isn't ideal so torn between getting something with bigger battery range or going down the plug in hybrid route.

What kind of long journeys are you doing? Very few diesel plug ins, Mercedes and volvo are the only ones I have ever seen.

I had a phev 530e before an EV and although I liked it, I'm not going back after having full ev. Plugging in every day, watching electric range from the minute I got in the car, had far more anxiety in the phev than then ev.

Look at trading into a bigger battery ev and CCS instead of chademo and your options are opened up hugely.

Up to 77kwh cars available now in the 20-30k bracket, id4, ioniq 5, ev6 at a stretch in around 2021 reg plates.

Even 58kwh ioniq 5 or id3 might be an improvement for you, id3 available under 20k now.

Waste of time, no real savings, cheaper just go bigger battery EV or back to the dinosaur juice.

Don't get me wrong the right ones can be great to drive they just won't save you money if you're clocking up the miles.

Why not just get a Hybrid? That way you can drive an electric for the short journeys and the engine is there for the longer ones.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Had considered that but from chatting to some people, they reckoned the full hybrid worked out more expensive to run

Couple of 160km round trips a week, combination of motorway and national roads. Definitely winter driving is a pain as heater cuts the range.

Factoring in the charge time is a bit of a pain too but find the ABRP app brilliant for planning... Just the extra time on journey is annoying

Do you have your own charger? 160kms won't trouble any of the cars I linked, even with heater on in winter, not even close. Assuming they're within your budget of course, it's still a decent chunk of money

You could either go for a longer range EV or get a plugin in hybrid. PHEVs only work if you do a lot of short journeys.

Forget about HEV they are just efficient petrol/diesel engines. You might get a kilometer or two in EV mode but thats it. Pointless.

Any ideas on the best of the phevs available? New or secondhand?

Depends what you need, a PHEV could be anything from a Range Rover to an Opel Astra

A good PHEV is one where the battery will cover most of your daily use.
