Sheep died, only one left in field. Is this common?

    Hiya,

Not a farmer, I just live neighbouring a large field where two sheep have been kept for a few months.

One sadly died last week after the few bad days of frost and snow. I have no idea why it died, I'm assuming maybe it was sick before and the weather didn't help. The other sheep is on its own now and I haven't seen the farmer visit the field in at least a week.

Is that normal? I just assumed in winter they'd be checked on more often, given more feed etc. but I haven't see anyone at all.

We left a note on the gate for the farmer to see whenever he checks, but we don't have his number unfortunately, as we just moved to the area.

I have no idea what's normal in terms of sheep care, so I'm genuinely curious and would like to be more knowledgeable for the future.

Maybe I'm being overly sentimental here, but I know sheep are highly social animals and it just feels awful to see the poor lone sheep now. The couple of days after the other one died, it lay down in the same area, head down on the grass, just watching it.

Thanks for any insights, really appreciate it!
