From Warner Bros. Pictures, “The Alto Knights” stars Academy Award winner Robert De Niro in a dual role, directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Barry Levinson.

The film follows two of New York’s most notorious organized crime bosses, Frank Costello (De Niro) and Vito Genovese (De Niro), as they vie for control of the city’s streets. Once the best of friends, petty jealousies and a series of betrayals place them on a deadly collision course that will reshape the Mafia (and America) forever.

“The Alto Knights” was written by Oscar nominee Nicholas Pileggi (“Goodfellas”) and produced by Oscar winner Irwin Winkler (“Rocky,” “Goodfellas”), Levinson, Jason Sosnoff, Charles Winkler and David Winkler, with Mike Drake executive producing.

    It certainly looks promising

    Yes, thought it was awful.

De Niro playing two characters - not just that it absolutely adds nothing to the movie, but actively detracts from it because there's no logical reason for him to be playing both characters. They're not related, not supposed to look alike, nothing - it's just a hokey gimmick.

Otherwise - uneven, not very compelling, tone all over the place, gaps in the story, performances average at best even from usually fantastic actors.

It felt to me oddly disjointed, almost like a miniseries that was originally much longer and was then hacked to death in the editing room.

Overall I wouldn't recommend it at all. It's not a good movie, it's not a good period piece, and it's not even mindlessly entertaining.

Well I've just seen it, and while its not a masterpiece, it's a whole lot better than something like mission impossible. Go to enjoy de Nero acting with a bit of a story.
