ID3 or Megane etech

My wife currently drives a 191 petrol megane and wants to change to a EV.

She likes the Id3 and megane etech ( ioniq 5 is too big) but is nervous of going from petrol to electric. If she goes electric she will have access to a charger at work which is subsidised.

She commutes to the office 3 days a week which is roughly a 90km round trip per day costing approx €50 per week for petrol. So seems like a no brainer .

Question is which one of these would be more suitable?

Perfect case really, long enough distance to save good money on fuel but not enough to have anxiety over charging! When you say work charging 3 days a week, will you have home charging too? Think about getting that if you can, makes EV ownership a dream if you do.

Im more familiar with VW EVs and they'll absolutely do the job. But so will Renault.

90km round trip, either would do that 3 times over, 4 on a good day.

It's take your pick really which you prefer and find better value, ID3 is great to drive, I can't comment on the Renault but reviewers liked it in general. I'll say that I don't find the interior of the VW ID products very visually appealing, they have been completely overshadowed by Skoda and Cupra siblings which I find strange to allow happen. Mégane might be a bit nicer inside, but it's all subjective.

If you're looking ID3 you'd really have to consider cupra born too. Generally got more favourable reviews than ID3 despite being almost the same car.

Lastly, what warranty do Renault give?

Is it your same 3 years? If it's longer than VW then it might sway you that way.

Renault is a 5 year warranty on new cars

Check the Kia E-Niro also, which have a 7 year warranty from new, and a little more range than the ID3, or Megane e -tech, there is a 2023 - refreshed variant of E niro, on DD for circa 28k, and you would still have 5years + of a warranty remaining. It has the top “k4” trim:

I have the Megane e-tech and the driving seat is a really lovely place to be. The car drives beautifully and the Google OS is really good.

As said above, drive both - but for me the Megane was an easy decision!

Battery Life and It's Only Electric are two of the best EV reviewers on youtube and both have done Megane vs ID3 comparisons e.g.

Megane all day for me. Very nice inside and arguably one of the best infotainment systems on the market. The Volkswagen is capable but just feels like a soulless appliance, the Renault has real design flair and is a car you might enjoy owning.

Thanks...we're looking at both at weekend and then she can make up her mind.....might get better trade in renault for renault .

I was parked beside a Renault this morning. Had a good look at it. Looks very nice inside and out. Also as a user of Android Automotive (Polestar) have to say it's one of the best around.

On a side note...is there any particular home charger worth going for?

Is Renault being taken over by Nissan? will it affect delivery/spares etc?

    Ms

The Megane. It's just much nicer and such a nice place to sit. It has a lovely easy to use and very clear user interface too.

Lol no. Nissan are in trouble and are looking at joining up with Honda.

At the moment though Renault Nissan and Mitsubishi remember them have an alliance.

Renault saved Nissan in the late 90s otherwise Nissan would have been gone the way of Rover and SAAB.

Renault are part owned by the French Government too and are massive.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Good news.....best of luck in your driving future

Would recommend getting the Kelec app to use alongside the Renault app. It's more reliable and user friendly.

Sorry, I forgot you had linked one in your OP! Was it that actual one you got? Well wear, lovely car.

Was there much wiggle room from the dealer on the price?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 229 ✭✭beetlebailey

Ended up going with this one.....

Not too much wriggle room, wanted €14500 with my 2019 petrol megane, settled at €14000. TBH that was a lot better than I expected.

Test drove a 241 Megane Etech today, it has some poke when in sport mode. Nice car, really responsive.

What are these like with 220bhp and only being FWD?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,830 ✭✭✭CMOTDibbler

It's not unusual to have FWD and 200+ bhp. Bit of torque steer and traction loss if you're heavy with the right foot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 185 ✭✭spudwiser

According to one of the YouTube videos I saw, they are power limited until about 60kmph to avoid/reduce traction loss. It's still easily done on damp/wet roads
