Post Primary Business Teacher Query

    Hi I recently qualified as a secondary teacher (did a PME). I'm struggling to get teaching hours in secondary schools. Can I teach in further education colleges/youth reach etc? Would I get qualified or non qualified tutor pay rate?

    The PME will get you the qualified rate if teaching in a Post Leaving Cert College. Most of these are linked to schools and employ second-level teachers. Business teachers can teach any number of business and management courses at QQI levels 5 and 6. In other colleges, such as Youthreach and Adult Education Centres, you may not be offered a teacher contract, so the rate may be less, and you may get different holidays than second-level teachers. In Youthreach, the contract is for a 'resource' person and involves administration and teaching hours. The pay and conditions are different from second level. It is hard to get a job as a business teacher, as accounting and economics have been dropped by many schools or are not chosen by many Leaving Cert students, as they are not compulsory for any third-level courses like science subjects. I recommend you get qualified in a complementary and in-demand subject like maths. With a business degree you will already have done a lot of maths such as statistics, financial maths and all arithmetic. Alternatively, look at a postgrad in guidance, as those jobs are regularly advertised.
