    Hi folks,

The previous thread on Ireland's Refugee Policy was being used as a dumping ground for anything to do with immigration. It has gone so far off topic that the mods feel collectively it is beyond saving and thus it will shortly be closed and not reopened.

Going forward this thread will be used to discuss Immigration in Ireland. It will not have the more narrow parameters of discussion of the refugee policy thread so a broader discussion can be facilitated.

However there are some parameters that need to be clarified before posting in this thread, so before you post please make sure you understand the rules laid out below:

Asylum seekers are NOT illegal immigrants - this is a point of law and not something that can be disputed at present. Please do not insinuate those claiming asylum are illegals - it is the legal right of everyone as per Article 14 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Under international law, anyone has the right to apply for asylum in any country that has signed the 1951 UN Convention, and to remain there until the authorities in that country assess their claim.

Please remain civil to each other. If you think someone is posting inaccurate information, or indeed trying to twist facts to suit their agenda, do not accuse them of lying. Point out their inaccuracies and move on.

No discussion of anything before the courts permitted.

There are threads dedicated to conflict in Ukraine and the Middle East. The situation in those countries is not for discussion here, although the impact on Ireland of people entering the country to escape such conflicts can be discussed.

Absolutely no anecdotes are permitted. It is not constructive posting and only leads to disagreements over things that may or may not have happened.

Updated 15/1/25: Can we please once again read the mod warnings in the OP and remain civil when we are posting on this thread. We won't be deleting posts going forward they will come with warnings and bans.
