Can't access voicemail

I set up voicemail with a personal greeting a few years ago. Recently, I've been receiving texts saying that I have new voice messages. When I dial 171 to access them, I'm prompted to set up voicemail.

How are messages being kept if the voicemail isn't set up, and what happened to the original recording I did?

Posting here before I call customer service to explain this mystery.

Happens to me regularly with Vodafone for some reason. Each time I just go through the setup process again and the message is still there. I think if you don't have a personal greeting set, callers just get a generic computer generated voice that recites the phone number.

I had this problem before. I didn't want to use a personal greeting and just wanted the generic one, but wasn't able to set that. I got that sorted by PM'ing the Vodafone reps on here when that was still an option, but my voicemail just randomly reset itself one day and I was back to square one. Had to set up a personal greeting just to open the messages.
