Tax Reduction With Marital Status Change ?!

    Hi,

Perhaps someone can clarify how this works.

I was registered with Revenue as single for about 3 years, but am married now. I got to know that married people pay less tax, and want to update my Marital Status, but this requires PPS number of the Spouse, and Tax is reduced when both Spouses are in Ireland. Both me and my souse are Non-EU, and that I reside in Ireland, and she resides back home.

Below is what I found out.

I will still be paying tax as a Single person, so do I need to submit evidence my spouse is not employed, as she is a student, which is also added to the Marriage Registration document, is this sufficient ?

Can someone please advise how to go about this to reduce the tax I'm paying.

    Thank You

There is no reduction in tax, if your wife is allowed to work in Ireland you can share tax credits which means that if she or you do not use all your credits normally, together you might be jointly able to reduce tax paid.

Since your partner appears not to have tax credits in Ireland, nothing will change for you. Only thing you could do is claim tax back on her student fees if over a certain amount.

Thanks @CramCycle for clarifying, then I must have misunderstood.

    Appreciate you clarifying it.

I'm understanding the confusion arose from the PWC Tax Calculator which shows increased monthly disposable income when choosing married, and spouse not earning.

Easily done, there is a presumption in those calculators that both are Irish Residents registered for tax in the state.

Clearly I didn't understand that, thanks again..

I had reached out to Revenue on reduced tax matter, and they informed me I need to get a document from wife's country of residence showing she has no income.

Can someone advise what type of document can be submitted.
