    I bought a coffee machine online from Currys. I used it a few times and decided to return it. I filled in the returns form online entering the order number etc. There was no question asking if the product had been used. I received an email advising a courier will collect the item.

    When they receive the item and inspect it, they will discover it has been used.

    What is likely to happen? Will they refund or return the item to me?

    I will hazard a guess you'll be sh1t out of luck when they discover it's used

    Their returns policy (change of mind) is on their website:

    “If you purchased online, you can return your item within 30 days even if you have opened it for inspection. It must be returned as new and where possible, in its original packaging.”

    In the absence of a fault and the fact that it has been used…

    Why on earth would you expect someone to give you a full refund for an article that you have used?

    You can look at it, like you would in a shop, and return it if not happy with it. You can send it back if it's faulty. But why on earth would you expect a refund for using it and and just not liking it? Would you go back to a shop with something you used and just didn't like? Buyer's remorse doesn't stretch that far.

    This thread has to be a wind up. Why would anybody expect to buy something, use if for a little while and then expect to be able to send it back for a refund due to changing their mind?

    +1 offering a return policy which excludes faults (AKA 'no quibble' or 'change of mind') is giving the consumer more than his/ her legal entitlement. But expecting a store to take back an applicance which has been used is totally taking the mickey.

    I would interpret 'even if you have opened it for inspection' to implicitly exclude actual use. What they're effectively saying here is that you can take the item out of the box, study it and read the manual but once you plug it in and use it, the return policy no longer applies.

    It's now secondhand and cannot be sold as new so would have to be heavily discounted. They'd even be on dodgy ground offering it as a 'display item'. Which implies that it was handled in the showroom but never plugged in and actually used.
