New build — €3k budget

    Hi folks.
I built my current system in 2016 and it’s served me well with minor upgrades and some overclocking. I’m now in a position to build a new machine and fortunate enough to have a solid budget.

My current system is an i7 6700K @4.7 GHz

    Corsair 32 GB DDR4 memory (4x8 GB) 2666 MHz C16

    RTX 2080 Super 8 GB (upgraded from a 1070)

    Samsung 950 Pro 512 GB M.2

    Samsung 850 EVO 870 2TB

And a couple of large spinning disks.

This machine has served me well and I’ll find use for it elsewhere. But, I’d like to build a new machine primarily for gaming. I’ve separate work machines but it’s nice to have an extra compute system for a simulation or a render.

While this system would be mostly for gaming it would also be useful for physical simulation software (OpenFOAM and Ansys) Rendering and VR/AR (Blender, WebXR). But… I have work systems for these.

I’m currently looking at an 9800 X3D system with either a 5070 or 5080 depending on price and performance. I’d like to go with 64 GB of RAM and 12 GB of VRAM. I’ll probably opt for a 2 TB M.2 drive and high capacity spinning disks for data backups (with BackBlaze and a separate RAID 6 system)

I also have a crappy HP Z27 4K panel. I’d like to get a better monitor, I was even considering a 42” LG OLED TV. But happy to keep this thing for longer and replace it later.

Anyway, I realise I’m in a pretty good position budget wise but I’d like to get similar longevity to my current system. Prices have gotten pretty nuts.

I guess I’m primarily looking for motherboard advice I think but would like to hear alternatives to the 9800 X3D. I had high hopes for the new Intel chips, and while they seem like good chips for non gaming tasks they are pretty underwhelming

I prefer pretty minimal cases, currently cool with a Noctura NH D15 and would prefer similar, not interested in water cooling (I’ve worked in the thermal management domain before!).

The 9900x3D and 9550X3D coming out end of January. There gonna be showing of at CES 2025.The 9800X3D gonna be hard to find unless you want to pay a premium for it.

The RTX 5080 and 5090 gonna be expensive.

I’m in no rush to buy for at least a couple of months. It’s a busy time of year for me so right now I’m trying to get a feel for things as new stuff is coming out.

    So I’ve ordered the following:

    9800 X3D

    MSI MAG X870E Tomahawk WiFi

    CORSAIR Vengeance DDR5 RAM 64GB (2x32GB) 6000MHz CL30

    Noctua NH-D15 G2 LBC

    Samsung 990 PRO NVMe M.2 SSD, 2TB

    Corsair RM850e PSU

    Corsair 4000D Airflow

I’ll reuse my 2080 Super for a few months until the 50 series are more generally available.

Are you tied to Nvidia with rendering/work outside of gaming? If not worth looking at AMD imo, they've the 9070xt coming in a month which 'might' be good, bought a 7900xtx myself as I was waiting for a 5080 but the real cost Vs claimed MSRP is a joke, generational improvement was crap as well.

I like Nvidia GPUs for working with Blender. I’ll certainly take a look at the 9070xt.

It's a tough market trying to get any value with GPUs

Well 9700xt gonna have good supply compared to the 5070Ti which gonna have terrible supply.

The 5070 looking disappointing only 10% to 15% better than standard 4070 guessing super version it worse.
