Are Reverse osmosis water filters compatible

So I have inherited a clean working reverse osmosis filter system.. From compring pictures it appears to have 5 stages. Are the filters from all similar systems compatible. The house also has a separate water softener.. it too works, and I top up. Do the water softener systems every wear out or need replacing.
