Hi all, the young lad was just wondering can he upgrade his CPU from Ryzen 5 2400g to Ryzen 7 2700x3D without a BIOS update or does he need to update, if so is this hard to do and can he still use the 2400g until he gets the new cpu after the update also does he need to update chipset drivers, The motherboard is a B450m-A, also would the rtx4060 GPU work with this CPU or is there a better card for the same money he's on a budget. He has everything else.

If he goes to the asus support page for his motherboard he should see the minimum version of the bios he'll need for the 5700x3d. https://www.asus.com/motherboards-components/motherboards/prime/prime-b450m-a/helpdesk_cpu?model2Name=PRIME-B450M-A
… which is 3211 3802. So if he checks his bios version that should give him an indication if he'll need to do the Bios update.

The rtx4060 is AFAIK a PCI 4 x8 (lanes out of 16) GPU (open to correction on this) and the B450 is PCI 3. So it's sort of like half x half in a sense - so there may be some performance degradation on paper - how this performs in game may vary from game to game thou', others here who are more into the gaming side of things might be able to give a better idea.

You will need BIOS 3802 or later - currently that motherboard has BIOS 4622 available so I would definitely get that.

ASUS lists 3 methods of doing it - I recommend doing EZ Flash method (from BIOS menu).

Chipset drivers can be installed in Windows.

RTX 4060 is decent at its current price (around 295eur) - better performance & features (DLSS, Frame-Generation) than AMD RX 7600.

The EZ flash system just needs you to select the downloaded and unzipped BIOS file and it'll do the rest.

And the old CPU will still work, the support for it won't be lost.

Thanks k.o.kiki and dazberry his current BIOS is 0409 so he definitely needs an update, is it easy to do this with the EZ Flash method and can he still use his old CPU after update when he is waiting for the new one to be delivered.
