As kids we used putty but it takes ages to dry

    Trying to enthuse the childer

    Any other suggestions ?

Would tiling glue and grout be better? I might have a bag of grout in the shed. Never tiled before .... Is it worth considering ?

Tiling adhesive would be best but not grout, but check out whether it's safe for use by kids as it might cause irritation/dryness. Some adhesives are dual-purpose adhesive and grout.

I might have a bag of grout in the shed. Wondering why grout would not be suitable? Is it because the grout will soak into the beach stones and make it visually a mess ?.

It shrinks and cracks in larger gaps and it's not an adhesive. But sure try it!

Putey effort with the kids LOL

All my family did this as kids ... Was good fun

Will give the tile glue and grout a go another day ... Had to be outdoors. Inside house could be very messy

Looking well. The thing with grout is that you can rub it down with a damp sponge to knock-back the areas between the stones, which then brings the stones forward - which you can't do with putty!

How long do you have to play around grout ? Does it all harden at the same speed ?

I know tile glue has a fast acting version and slow

Someone fxuked up a relatives house tiling and I've always been scared of tiling ever since ... I've never used grout or tiling glue once because of that

Time to get over that ... And not take on any big tiling work, but just have fun with it

    20 to 30 mins, I think.

    River stones - good idea,

Can you make your own washed glass pieces ?

Loved collecting them on the beach as a kid
