Three Sim - Blocked From Using in Modem Apparently

I have used a Three sim in a modem for 5 years+ without any issue.

The speed has now dropped to 2/3 MB per second.

I phoned Three and they said that I have acted against their T&C's and that I can only use the sim in a phone. And that is why the speed has slowed down to a crawl.

Is that a plausible reason? Are Three cracking down on people like me?

Should I just but a new Three sim? or get a 48 sim perhaps? Is data truly unlimited with 48 these days?

    Thank you.

EECC was transposed into Irish law and enacted in March 2023 so Three can't block or restrict tethering as per their own notice below...

    https://notifications.three.ie/EECC/prepay/1

    "4.Removal of prohibition on tethering

Effective from the effective date, we will remove any term from our plans that does not allow tethering, the use of your handset as a modem or the use of your SIM in conjunction with a modem.

The affected plans are set out below:

    3 Prepay Hero
    3 Prepay 15
    3 Prepay 20
    3 Prepay 30
    3 Prepay Broadband

Free text EVERYTHING to 50272 to get your plan information.

There is no change from the way that customers can use data with their plans. Any old term that did not allow tethering was not enforced."

Same as above with other plans listed at this link...

Thanks Ten Pin. Clearly Three customer service have misled me.

Any clue why the download speed has gone to a crawl? Is it possible that I'm getting throttled? The issue is not with the network given that my other Three sim in the house gives a normal download speed.

other SIM in the house or in the same modem/router?
Could it be router at fault?

Three seem to be refarming spectrum around - is it possible they've changed one of the bands and your router can't aggregate it while your phone can? Or does the other SIM in the same router give normal speed?

    To be clearer:

    • Different Three Sim works fine in the modem. i.e. normal 100 MB speed.
    • Modem settings all look fine.
    • To make matters stranger - speed has returned to normal early this morning (Saturday). But I bet this will be short lived. I have seen that happen before.

i.e. In a nutshell - the issue does not appear to be the modem, the issue does not appear to be modem settings, the issue does not appear to be reception, the issue appears to be that Three are restricting my speed severely during peak hours.

Solution seems to be to cancel and get another sim. I have ordered a 48 sim.

sky mobile have unlimited 5g data for life for €15. Might be worth checking out if Vodafone signal is good in your area as they piggyback on vodafone.

it’s a mobile plan so obviously don’t mention you’re going to stick it in a router

Somehow unable to find T&C for ROI, you have a link?
UK mention fair usage policy but lame to specify the cap, suspect 100GB and then cap on the speed

What router have you got? Do you have ability to see bands and cells it connects to and lock?

    I have a TP-Link AC1200.

    The band is 3.

I don't know whee to find the cell?

    Thanks.

"band is 3" - suspect this when good speed, check when the speed drops.
    "TP-Link (4G+ CAT6) AC1200" = MR600, perhaps time to upgrade/change brand.
