Welby said in his statement that, when he became aware of the abuse in this case in 2013, he had been told that police had been informed.

If he believed that the police had been informed of the abuse in this case then why has he been forced to resign?

How far did he check that the police had been informed? Just took someone’s word for it? No names I take it?

On the radio this evening it was reported that he said he expected it “would be dealt with”. Sounds VERY like Cardinal (then just a humble 😙 Father of course) Sean Brady who assumed that the abuser(s) he was sent to interview would also be dealt with, but, like Welby, never bothered following up on that.

Seems like a pretty horrible individual. Happy to run a church based on a mountain of wealth while lecturing others on how to believe. On top of that, he presides over this.

    No wonder attendance is plummeting.

Welby apologised for slavery, something that ended centuries ago - but when he had the chance to report a man who beat boys so badly they had to wear nappies ...he refused to lift a finger.

Just think about the level of hypocrisy and self righteousness that that takes.

It took some amount of pressure to make him jump. I despair of all varieties of churchmen. Protect the institution at any cost.

I'm not as negative on Welby as some but he is a former banker so he is supposed to know about structures and procedures and evidence. So it was inevitable he would, well bow to the inevitable and resign over that.

It was the appropriate thing to do.

What a monstrous p.o.s. that Smyth was. Those "christian" summer camps can be truly horrendous.

Wonder will the Anglican faithful start asking when is their new boss going to be chosen when they see how quickly their Catholic brothers sort out the succession…
