Is soundproofing a ceiling a waste of time if there's a fusebox touching the ceiling in one corner and plumbing pipes in another corner?

depends how you were planning on sound proofing it. But likely not a waste of time. Neither of those sounds like a major concern.

If I could get away with just tacking soundproof plasterboard onto the existing ceiling I would, I'd rather not have the disruption of the current ceiling being stripped out and rails being fitted. I'd hate to have that done only for the airborne noise to still come through the corner parts that can't be covered. There's panels you can get that just stick to the existing ceiling but I don't know if they're just a gimmick.

There’s no such thing as sound proof plasterboard.

Tacking a layer of dense plasterboard non top is not going to make a huge difference. Its would need proper insulation

So is this product false advertising then?

Dense plasterboard (fyrechek, soundchek) alone makes very little difference. That product is more than just dense plasterboard. It's dense plasterboard plus 20mm of rubber. The rubber is doing the heavy lifting. But even then, I'd expect only minor results.

They haven't claimed any actual performance or said anything about the level sound it blocks. So there's no advertising to be false, on that page at least. It just says high performance, which is subjective.

You need to see manufacturer test data and assess the tested details.
