Best pay as you go plan to get a new phone number

We got a tablet at the house and we'd like to add Whatsapp to it with its own number and are wondering what's the best/cheapest option for getting a new number and keeping it.

This number will never be actually used for anything other than verifying WhatsApp and whatever minimum activity I need to do to keep the number active. The tablet doesn't even have a sim card slot.

Is there any provider who has cheaper minimum top ups or longer times between requiring top ups? Or maybe 3 would be a decent shout cause I could use the credit to buy a game or something on the play store?

    Thanks

Probably Lyca €5 a month data only bundle would do the job.

A Vodafone number will stay active with a €5 top up every 6 months.

Vodafone PAYG SIM, €5 every 8 months to keep number active (assuming the tablet will use WiFi from house broadband).

VF PAYG SIMs are free when ordered online (just ignore the recurring cost and deselect any option to top up). Not sure how long it stays active for initially without adding credit but they normally send a notification SMS in advance of deactivation so you'll know when to add €5.

Thanks guys, picked up a VF sim there to get it started at least!

Yeah just to confirm the tablet will be using WiFi. My phone is dual sim so I'll probably just keep the new VF sim in the second sim card slot so I can get notifications etc
