    Hey folks,

I have an iPhone 13 that's seen better days. Was on the verge of signing up to a 2 year contract and getting a regular 16 but a mate has recently done the same and he has a 14 plus that he's getting rid of now. It's in great nick and very good battery health.

Im not too fussed by AI but I was looking forward to a bit of a camera upgrade jumping from a 13 to 16 and I guess the 14 camera will be fairly similar to my 13?

    Pros

Bigger screen, no contract needed, price he wants is mates rates and below market price.

    Cons

Older model, Camera not as good, no dynamic island, phone is used albeit good condition so more prone to battery degrading etc.

I'm a bit torn as I like shiny new things but is the 16 worth jumping into a 2 year contract at circa 45 a month when I can grab a 14 plus and go to Gomo for 15 a month.

You are not comparing like with like. You have three options:

Mate's iPhone 14 cost plus GoMo €15 per month

New iPhone 16 cost plus GoMo €15 per month

'Subsidised' iPhone 16 cost plus €45 per month.

You will find that Option 3 is significantly more expensive over 24 months than Option 2. If you can buy the iPhone 16 from Apple then the difference over the cost of the iPhone 14 from your friend is the difference between Options 1 and 2.

I would go with Option 2 which is initially the most expensive but will save you money in the long run. In a couple of years, the iPhone 14 will be getting on and you will need to change again putting you back where you are now. The iPhone 16 will last you much longer and is better future-proofed.

Cheers for the reply. Sorry I should have mentioned buying a 16 outright is not an option this side of Christmas.

I've just been offered a deal through my work of €400 for the 16 and then 36 a month.

    €36 x 24 = 864 plus 400 = €1264 which seems pretty good for phone and 2 years service.

    Mates iphone 14+ would be €300 plus €15 x 24 = €660.

Your work deal is an excellent one. To buy an iPhone 16 and stay on GoMo would be €979 + 24 x €15 = €1,339. The work deal is a decent subsidy on the handset.
